DRUM ROLL 🥁 !

INTRODUCING our new practice manager! Warm (belated) welcome to Radhika who has already been leading the team through general chaos of everyday practice for the past month or so 😀

Radhika (RAH-thi-KAH) was born in Seattle, WA and moved with her family to New York shortly after. After four years in New York, her family moved back to western Washington, in the Snohomish County area. Radhika started riding horses in 2004 in Granite Falls where she traded labor for a lease and riding lessons. She spent almost every weekend, as well as her entire summers, at the barn riding. During summer Radhika would teach summer camp kids how to ride Western.

Radhika then attended Western Washington University where she rode on the Equestrian Team for all four years of college. Radhika was fortunate enough to be able to purchase her favorite lesson horse from her trainer (a red Arabian mare named Sasi). During this time, Radhika obtained an English Literature Degree, and then took a year off of school before moving down to Vancouver, WA (with her horse, two dogs, and one cat) to attend WSU Vancouver where she obtained a Master's Degree in Public Affairs.

Radhika started her post graduate career in non-profit work, specifically in animal shelters. She managed five veterinary and animal welfare programs for the community at the Humane Society for SW Washington. Radhika then moved into a small animal clinic setting as a veterinary assistant where she progressed from Shift Lead to Practice Manager. After six years of small animal practice management, Radhika accepted her current position at Tacoma Equine where she is excited to be back in the equine world and continue leading engaged and empowered teams.

In her free time, you can find Radhika reading (books, comics, manga), chasing her daughter, adventuring with her husband, watching anime, listening to horror podcasts, or being harassed by the two senior dogs.

🐴 Why Brooming Beats Leaf Blowing in the Barn Aisle 🧹

Keeping a barn clean is essential, but how we clean matters just as much as the result. While leaf blowers may seem like a quick solution, they can stir up large amounts of dust, mold spores, bedding particles, and other airborne debris that can impact both horse and human respiratory health.
When you broom the aisle, much of the dust and debris can be collected and removed rather than blasted into the air.

This helps:
✅ Reduce airborne dust particles
✅ Create a healthier breathing environment for horses
✅ Lower exposure to allergens, mold spores, and irritants for barn staff and riders
✅ Support horses with respiratory conditions such as heaves (equine asthma)
✅ Keep dust from settling back onto stalls, feed, tack, and water buckets

Horses spend much of their time in the barn, and their respiratory systems are highly sensitive to dust and airborne contaminants. Every effort to minimize dust exposure can contribute to better lung health, improved performance, and overall well-being. The next time you're cleaning the barn aisle, consider reaching for a broom instead of a blower. It may take a little more effort, but cleaner air is a benefit both horses and humans can breathe easier about.
