Howru retired from showing as of yesterday, rounding off his show career at the Japanese Akitainu Club USA's UKC Nihon Ken Heritage Specialty. And he decided to celebrate his retirement with a bang, earning Best in Heritage Specialty over a large pool of lovely Nihon Ken, including his own grand champion sire.

I am immensely proud of how well he showed for me, tolerating a very thorough exam and staying engaged with me the entire time in the group ring whilst the judge carefully examined each dog.

My thanks to judge Claire Mancha for her expert judging and awarding is so highly. It truly feels like a recognition of all our training efforts and how far we've come.

With a group one placement at the Tacoma Kennel Club, placing over 20 other dogs, Leif earned his final points toward his Certificate of Merit!

We are thoroughly exhausted after this weekend. Leif is more pet than show dog, and his human does this because I'm the oldest one so she has to play along with me as the youngest one 🙉. And with historically large entries for the PNW, his brain was fried by the time he stood in the group ring for the second show of the day. I screamed when the judge pointed at them for first place.

And to wrap up our little accomplishments for the weekend, he also got his second ATT leg, earning him his title!

I'm super proud of these two as a breeder and sister, and while they don't *quite* get to rest just yet (praying that Nike can maybe earn some points in the future once she's matured some more), we can take it easy now that he's finished his CM.

Our little bitty win this weekend was earning Nike's first point towards her CM and her ATT title 🥳.

For a girly who prefers her strangers at arm's length, she handled all the touching between the exam and the ATT attempts as well I could have possibly asked for, not to mention having to acclimate to claustrophobic ring setup.

We still have a long way to go, both with her exam training and points, but I'm so so proud of this not-a-baby for all her hard work so far.

What an experience it's been but finally we're done. Howru earned his final point yesterday in Puyallup with a Best in Open Show under judge Stacey Davis, and, pending AKC, has completed his Certificate of Merit.

The environment was extremely challenging - the rings are extremely crowded and Howru struggles when he's forced into bubble breaking close quarters with other dogs. But he held it together so so well, and nailed every part except getting checked for his family jewels (the judge did find them in the end 😂).

I'm so very thankful for our lovely judge - I really appreciate her compliments on his soundness but more than anything I'm grateful for her patience with me getting Howru set up, and especially for her understanding of the nuances of showing a primitive breed.

This is our official retirement from AKC conformation - we're going to attend the UKC Nihon Ken specialty at the end of the month, but that'll be his last appearance in the ring. We'll stick to our sniffy sports from now on.

The girls and I took a visit to the new farmer's market in downtown Seattle and stopped at the Amazon campus, also known as Lili's old haunt. Swipe ➡️ to see Lili at 1.5 years old almost 8 years ago now 😱.
