Whew…. I’m going out on a limb and announcing the community cat clinic as a HUGE success! Here are some stats:

Drumroll please 🥁🥁🥁

Tabby Tails transported 5️⃣3️⃣ 🐱 to Nuzzels & Co. for their date with the veterinarian!
3️⃣0️⃣ females 57%
2️⃣3️⃣ males 43%

All were healthy and thriving following their treatments and successfully made it back home.

Tabiona and Hanna folks knocked it out of the park on their trapping effort and catch rate! Of the total number of traps set in an attempt to catch 6️⃣6️⃣ cats, 5️⃣3️⃣ cats were captured! That’s a catch rate of 87%!
Amazing results! 💪🏻

Maximum #🐱 from one location = 9️⃣

3️⃣0️⃣ 🐱 That’s the number of cats the appointment was for. We exceeded the target by 177%! 😬 We 💜Nuzzels&Co💜

Let’s dig a little deeper into some numbers that speak for the behind the scenes effort:

4️⃣8️⃣ days between when the appointment was booked and the event.

2️⃣2️⃣ cat caretakers/owners to coordinate with for the appointment. It was about 3 weeks of prep distributing traps and providing guidance on trap training etc.

7️⃣8️⃣ total traps borrowed from 7️⃣ different groups or individuals spanning the distance from the Wasatch back to Vernal. This was also the range included in the hunt for supplies….like newspaper. In this digital age, newspaper is a rare and hot commodity. 😜
O and did I mention we didn’t have an operational transport van till about a week before the event?!?! Rodney and Matt deserve all the credit for installing the new transmission in the cold and wind and making sure everything worked with no new surprises!
The list is long and each deserve a HUGE thank you!

Nuzzels & Co/Heidi

Doc Hodges/Paws4Life
Brook Frost
Bryan Winch
Matt Aleman
Rodney Winch

3️⃣ brave volunteers helped me herd cats and people the day of the event! Rodney, Carlie Hight, and Doc💜
This included waking up at zero dark thirty for at least 16 hours of round trip fun (that smelled amazing)! 😉

The cost of population control, or in our case, the SAVINGS of a healthier cat population (thanks to Best Friends Animal Foundation):
The clinic was $20/cat. Total for all cats was $1,060. Let’s compare this to what it could be if this TNR program wasn’t available or didn’t exist….
In Utah, the average cost, even kinda on the low end, for spay/neuter on cats is $195 (includes rabies, vaxs, dewormer).
$195x53=‼️$10,335‼️😳😨
The TNR program saved the community $9️⃣2️⃣7️⃣5️⃣!!! 🎉🎊🎉 not to mention a good portion of folks would not have even considered the treatment at this higher cost. Understood.

Now let’s talk population control using the # of females we spayed:
We had 30 females in this group. 1 female can have up to 4 litters of kittens a year but for this let’s just go with a middle of the road number of 2 litters/year with 5 kittens/litter.
Side note: They can also get pregnant as early as four months old.
That’s 30x2x5=3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ kittens avoided this spring, 2026 in Tabiona and Hanna.
This number grows expectantly each year and I’ve blasted numbers already but what the heck, just a few more. Let’s look at one more year just to see the wild number avoided in 2027:
Say 50% of the kittens in the 2026 litters are female. That’s another 150 females producing kittens. If they each have 2 litters/year… 180x2x5=1️⃣8️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ potential kittens in 2027 avoided just from the 30 females that were spayed yesterday. WILD! I could keep going but I think you get the point. 🍻

Summary? I’m tired🥴🥱😴, LOL. I’m proud of everyone that wanted to participate in this event! Trapping cats is not easy and it takes a lot of effort (and a little luck), excellent work folks! The TNR program is amazing, we NEED it!
We 💜Best Friends Animal Society💜

Was it worth it?? HECK YA!

I will be planning another community cat clinic either this fall or next spring. Be on the look out for more info! I’m scheming on something else HUGE (like SUPER HUGE, prob more like MEGA HUGE) but wayyyyy to early to let that cat out of the bag😊

In the mean time, come play BINGO! Every Thursday night @ 7:30 in the Tabiona Town Hall!

It takes a village to be successful and boy did mine step up! Feeling greatful and blessed (and tired, lol)
💜 Jessie.

Tips for trapping cats!

This is a reminder to not feed the cats today and tomorrow. Hopefully this will make them hungry and improve the chances of getting them trapped on Saturday or Sunday. Whichever day works for you this weekend, set the trap (remove wire holding door open) and put food inside the trap. Sometimes anchovies or sardines, or even tuna fish work as excellent snacks to lure them in the trap. Canned cat food also works well. Let me know if you need some.

I’ll be around Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday to help. Call or text when you get cats trapped and we can figure out a plan of when to bring them over to my place. If you get multiple cats in a trap, it’s ok, call me and we can figure out how to get them separated.

Happy trapping!

Here is a quick video to go over how the traps work and what was included in the trap kit I dropped off with folks yesterday and will finish today.

If you have any questions just let me know 😃

Happy trap training!

Heads up! If you are on my list for the community cat clinic on March 30, I will be dropping off traps today and tomorrow. I think I’ve reached out to almost everyone that needed to borrow a trap.

If you haven’t heard from me…text me.

If you aren’t on my list and want to be….text me.

Let’s get those traps set out (with the door tied OPEN) and let those cats get used to being near the trap. Let’s traps train! We want to do this for a week. When you feed the cats put it IN the trap.

Questions? Comment or text me!

After a long winter parked in the shed waiting for a new transmission I happy to announce the shaggon wagon is back, baby!! Wahoo!!

TTs is blessed to have such handy guys on our board of directors that don’t mind freezing in the wind to repair the van.

She runs (and shifts) smooth as butter! But might need a well earned car wash😉.

What is the TNR program?

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a humane, non-lethal method for managing community (stray and feral) cat populations. It involves trapping cats, having them spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped for identification, then returning them to their outdoor homes to prevent new breeding cycles and stabilize colonies.

The Process: Cats are humanely caught, transported to a veterinarian for surgery, vaccines, and ear-tipped (the tip of one ear is removed) to show they have been fixed.
Benefits: TNR stops the birth of new kittens, reduces nuisance behaviors like howling or spraying, and improves the overall health of the cats.

Effectiveness: It is considered more effective than removing or euthanizing cats, which leads to a "vacuum effect" where new cats move into the territory.

Community Impact: These programs reduce shelter overcrowding and, when properly implemented, can reduce the number of cats in a given area over time.

In Utah, Best Friends Network has reduced rate vouchers available for individuals and nonprofits for $20. We are a BFN partner and also a partner in the Nuzzles & Co who accept those vouchers and provides the veterinary care. We also work with many other vets in the Basin

Tabby Tails is proud to work with these amazing organizations and excited to offer this TNR event in our community! 💜
