Because Bear needed an ecollar correction for blowing off my recall on the last rep here does that mean he’s not ready to be off leash? Not necessarily- the fact that he came back in a high state of arousal when corrected and did NOT blow off the ecollar stim tells me he’s ready. If he had blown off my recall and the ecollar stim and I had to use his leash to get him back- THAT would tell me he’s is not ready to be off leash yet. I really pushed it here with Bear- you never know what life may throw your way when your dog is off leash and if you don’t train for as many scenarios as possible you have no idea how your dog may respond.

Twyla was a stray found living with my other foster Rocky and a third dog. Twyla was the only one of the three without porcupine quills. A kind man kept them fed while he searched for a rescue or shelter to take them in. Rocky was able to be caught with a leash while Twyla had to be caught in a humane trap- sadly the 3rd dog had become very ill due to the porcupine quills causing severe infection and had to be euthanized.

It’s not solely the vet staff’s job to control an unruly pet for routine procedures. Owners have a responsibility to work with their dogs to help ease the stress on the animals and the staff tasked with keeping them healthy. Dexter’s family has been working hard with him and it shows! Vet visits are becoming easier on all involved. When vets, trainers and owners all work together beautiful things can happen!

Our sweet porcupine pup is headed to Cornell today for his appointment and upcoming procedure.

Please send all the good vibes, positive thoughts, prayers, and love Rocky's way! We're hoping everything goes smoothly and that this is the final step in getting our sweet boy healthy, happy, and ready for his forever home.

Pressure and release will beat treats alone the majority of the time. Stop avoiding the difficult things with your dog. Practice solving simple problems together so when the real problems arise they can count on you to help guide them through.
