🚨 **SCAM ALERT: PLEASE READ & SHARE** 🚨

We want to make our community aware of a very convincing scam currently targeting pet owners and yesterday, it involved someone impersonating Bend Animal Emergency & Specialty Center.

A pet owner came to our hospital after receiving a phone call that appeared to come from our clinic’s phone number. The caller told him that his missing cat had suffered a traumatic event, had been brought to our hospital, and was currently undergoing emergency surgery.

The scammers then transferred him to another person and demanded immediate payment through Zelle in order to continue treatment.

What made this even more convincing and frightening was that they sent him an AI-generated image of his cat “in surgery.” The image looked remarkably like his missing cat, including his markings.

Thankfully, he became suspicious when they requested payment through Zelle. He hung up and came directly to our hospital, where we were able to confirm that his cat was not at our facility and the call had not come from our team.

His cat had previously been posted online as missing, which may be how the scammers obtained a photo and information to make their story so convincing.

⚠️ **PLEASE KNOW:**
Bend Animal Emergency & Specialty Center will NEVER request payment through Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, or similar peer-to-peer payment services.

We also have established protocols for stray or lost animals brought to us in critical condition by Good Samaritans. We will never pressure someone into immediately sending money through a third-party payment app in order for us to provide emergency care.

If you ever receive a call claiming to be from our hospital and something does not feel right, hang up and call us directly using our publicly listed phone number. Even if the incoming call appears to show our number, caller ID can be spoofed.

Please share this with other pet owners , particularly anyone who currently has a missing pet posted online. These scammers are using an incredibly vulnerable and frightening situation to target people, and AI-generated images can make the story feel very real.

If you have a missing pet, please also be cautious about how much personal information you share publicly.

The image attached to this post is the AI-generated image the scammer sent to the pet owner. It is NOT an actual patient or procedure at our hospital.

Y’all, we need some rescue magic for this one…

This little senior darling Summer’s human is in her 80s and is being forced to move where she cannot have Summer. Her human has become very dear to me, but I know the shelter is not the right place for Summer and we need to find her a new place by the week of the 25th.

Summer is a 13 year old shy girl who has been an indoor only cat since she was rescued a decade ago. She seems to be okay with other cats but does not like to rough house. She’s a chatty girl and when she feels comfortable and safe, she loves to be around her person and is a great bed and lap buddy on her terms. Summer LOVES Fancy Feast savory centers canned food and that’s largely what her diet is, plus a little dry food to snack on. An ideal home for her would be a quieter one with someone who is home a lot. She will be scared at first and we understand that - her entire life is about to turn upside down 🥺.

Summer had a physical recently with blood work done which was all normal except she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. She recently started taking methimazole for it once a day with no problems. She had a fibrosarcoma removed a few years ago and was recommended to not receive vaccine updates.

Her human ALSO has been dedicated to feeding a small colony of six cats who we have worked hard to TNR. They will be in danger if they stay at this property. We need to trap them and relocate them which is not ideal at all or something that we do if at all possible. If you could use a couple of barn cats and will promise to feed them and make sure they have shelter from the elements and predators, please reach out to us. These cats are not friendly but they will mouse in exchange for food and a safe place to live out their lives. They can go in pairs, threes, or all to one location. But we need to plan this so we trap them and can be transported soon to their new home(s) which we can provide with acclimation support if needed.

Heat Stroke Truths!

We are headed into a hot week, which means the usual posts containing dangerous myths about heat stroke are going to appear; so here is the truth;

💦 Cold water is FINE

It is fine for them to play in and it is absolutely fine to cool them down if you are worried they are too hot.

It does NOT need to be 'tepid' and it will NOT send them into shock.

If a dog is overheating, they need to be cooled down as fast as possible, especially if their body temperature is rising into the danger zone.

Cold water is the best way to do this. Any temperature lower than the dog will help but the colder the better for a fast reduction.

💦 Get them as wet as possible!

Always remember the phrase 'Wet then Vet' if you are worried they have heat stroke.

Soak them to the skin with the coldest water you can find and keep them in a breeze (roll down the car windows) while you travel to veterinary care.

You should NOT only wet their paws and bellies, soak the whole dog.

🧊 Ice cubes and iced treats are a great idea!

They have the same effect on dogs as they do on us! They are a lovely, cooling treat on a sunny day and giving frozen treats on a Kong or Lick-e-mat will help keep your pet entertained but quiet.

🐕 Thick double coats do NOT keep them cool

If you have a thick coated dog, their fur does not have a cooling quality. The undercoat traps their body heat and makes it harder for it to escape, doubly so when the outside temperatures rise and triply so if they start to exercise.

If you have a thick coated dog, you need to be extra careful in this warmer weather and put every measure in place to keep them safe, especially if they are elderly, flat faced or overweight.
