Please read. We are a USDA licensed and regulated agricultural and exotic animal petting zoo, we are NOT a wildlife animal rehabilitation facility nor are we TWRA licensed to do so. We are getting MANY calls DAILY of people picking up fawns and asking us to take them in. It is Illegal in the state of Tennessee, so please do your research and I hope you will click on this post here to find more helpful tips if you discover a new baby fawn. In most instances, please leave them alone or contact a licensed rehabilitator🙂
🦌 It’s that time of year again — fawn season.
We’re resharing this reminder because we’ve been receiving many calls and Facebook messages about baby deer being found alone.
Please share to help spread accurate information. ❤️
Help! I found a baby fawn!
Seeing a fawn alone can be alarming, but in most cases, it does not need to be rescued.
White-tailed deer mothers often leave their fawns alone during the day and return at dawn, dusk, or nighttime to nurse and care for them. This is completely normal behavior and helps protect the baby from predators.
A healthy fawn will usually:
1️⃣ Lie quietly curled up in grass, leaves, or landscaping
2️⃣ Stay very still and silent
3️⃣ Remain in the same general area for long periods — sometimes even near homes, decks, garages, or walking paths
As natural habitats continue to be replaced by urban development, people are encountering resting fawns more often.
Please DO NOT:
❌ Pick up the fawn
❌ Move it to another location
❌ Feed it
❌ Assume it has been abandoned simply because it is alone
Human interference can unintentionally separate a fawn from its mother and reduce its chances of survival.
When should you call a wildlife rehabilitator?
A fawn may truly need help if you notice:
⚠️ Visible injuries or bleeding
⚠️ Flies, maggots, or a strong odor
⚠️ Constant crying or excessive wandering
⚠️ Weakness, inability to stand, or obvious dehydration
⚠️ A deceased mother nearby
If you are unsure, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for guidance before intervening.
The best thing most people can do is simple:
❤️ Observe from a distance and give the fawn space.
