Almost exactly a month ago, this sweet leopard gecko came into our care. 💛 In just ONE month, it has gained 14 grams. That might not sound like much to someone unfamiliar with reptiles, but for a leopard gecko that arrived severely underweight and struggling, 14 grams is HUGE. Seeing that progress has been incredible. But this rescue is also an important reminder that weight gain isn’t the only thing that matters. This gecko has severe Metabolic Bone Disease, also known as MBD.
MBD happens when an animal’s body does not have the proper balance of calcium, vitamin D3, UVB exposure, and nutrition needed to build and maintain healthy bones. Over time, the body begins pulling calcium from the bones to survive. The result can be devastating.
Severe MBD can cause:
• Bent or crooked legs
• Swollen or deformed joints
• A curved spine
• A soft or misshapen jaw
• Tremors or difficulty walking
• Weakness and trouble standing
• Permanent skeletal deformities
And unfortunately, once MBD reaches this level, the damage that has already been done cannot simply be reversed 😭. With proper care, nutrition, supplementation, and veterinary guidance, this gecko can hopefully continue to improve and live comfortably. But it will likely carry the physical effects of its previous care for the rest of its life.
That is why education BEFORE bringing home an animal is so incredibly important. Reptiles are often marketed as “easy pets,” but easy does not mean they don’t have specific needs. Every species requires proper temperatures, lighting, supplementation, diet, enclosure size, and ongoing care. And honestly, this applies to every animal.
Please research before purchasing. Ask experienced keepers. Find reputable sources. Prepare the enclosure BEFORE bringing your new pet home. Understand the financial commitment, veterinary needs, lifespan, and daily care requirements. Because sometimes the consequences of improper care can be permanent.
We are incredibly proud of how far this little gecko has come in just one month. 14 grams stronger. 14 grams healthier. 14 grams closer to the life it always deserved. Education saves lives. Proper husbandry matters. And every animal deserves the chance to thrive, not just survive.
