💘 Roses are red, treats are divine, and Penny is our Valentine 💘

Penny is our February Dog of the Month, and at 4 years old she has been filling our days with love since joining the Central Bark family in May of 2022. Over the years, she has become such a familiar and cherished face around daycare.

With her happy trots and wagging tail, Penny brings nothing but good vibes to daycare. She loves soaking up pets from our staff and can often be found making her way around the play yards, stopping to say hi and checking in on everyone along the way. You will usually find her spending time with her besties Macaroni, Maisey, Dozer, Tonka, Kevin, Obi, Jade, Reuben, Binx, Ozzy, Jules, and Tucker. Whether she is playing or relaxing with her crew, Penny is happiest spending her day with her friends and the humans she adores. With a heart this big and a tail that never stops wagging, Penny is the kind of Valentine you fall in love with every single day💗

🐾 3 Often Overlooked Health Issues That Can Affect a Dog’s Social Behavior

Chronic, mild discomfort doesn’t always look dramatic—but it can absolutely change how a dog feels about and interacts with the world around them.

1️⃣ Unresolved Allergies
Persistent itchiness, ear irritation, or skin inflammation can leave dogs feeling uncomfortable and short on social tolerance, making interactions with other dogs, people, and the environment around them more tense.

2️⃣ Gastrointestinal (GI) Issues
Ongoing stomach upset, food sensitivities, or irregular digestion can cause stress and low-level discomfort that impacts mood, focus, and stress tolerance.

3️⃣ Joint Pain or Stiffness
Even mild joint discomfort can make play, movement, or physical handling uncomfortable, causing some dogs to withdraw socially or react negatively to social interactions.

💡 When dogs don’t feel their best physically, it can show up behaviorally. Supporting comfort is an important part of supporting success.

🐾✂️ 3 Nail Trim Tips for Dogs

1️⃣ Take it slow
You don’t have to trim every nail at once. 1 nail + 1 treat at a time still counts 🧀

2️⃣ Trim small amounts
Cut a little at a time. When in doubt, stop. You can always start with a nail file. This keeps the amount you’re taking off minimal while still removing sharp edges 🐶

3️⃣ Pick a calm moment
✅ Nail trims often go best after appropriate exercise or playtime
🛑 Avoid approaching your dog for a nail trim while they’re asleep. Make sure they are fully aware, and if they seem uncomfortable, stop and try again later

🔔 Why does nail length matter?
Nail length can have a lasting effect on how a dog moves. Walking, trotting, running, and playing are all impacted by nail length. Long nails can increase the risk of injury and, over time, may contribute to arthritis as dogs age
💬 How does your dog feel about nail trims? 👇😅

🧠 Behavior Myth Buster: “A Tired Dog Is a Calm Dog”

❌ Myth:
A tired dog is always a calm dog.

✅ Truth:
An overtired dog can actually become more intense, impulsive, and overstimulated—just like an overtired toddler.

When dogs don’t get enough rest and recovery, their nervous system can tip into overdrive. Instead of relaxing, you may observe:
❗️ Your dog seems restless when they should be ready for a nap
❗️ Your dog is reacting faster and more intensely toward distractions
❗️ An increase in zoomies, mouthing, or barking

A dog doesn’t become calm with increased exercise alone, but instead by having the right mix of:
✔️ Physical activity
✔️ Mental enrichment
✔️ Social time
✔️ Rest and downtime
