Let’s talk about saddle position 👇
This is something I see misunderstood all the time, and it makes a huge difference in how the saddle fits and how the horse moves.
When a saddle sits too far forward, it rests on top of the scapula. The scapula needs to rotate back with every stride. If the saddle blocks that movement, you often see:
• Shortened stride in the front end
• Tight or hollow back
• More bounce or instability behind the saddle
• Resistance, girthiness, or unwillingness to go forward
When the saddle is placed just behind the shoulder, it allows the scapula to move freely. This does a few important things:
• The tree points sit where the horse can actually support weight
• The panels make more even contact through the back
• The saddle stabilizes instead of rocking
• The horse can lift through the back and move correctly
Forward placement might look secure, but it often creates more movement and discomfort in the long run. Correct placement may feel slightly farther back than people expect, but it allows the whole system horse, saddle, and rider to work together instead of against each other.
If you’re unsure where your saddle should sit, take a photo from the side while your horse is standing square and I’m happy to help you take a look 👀
