Westie Rescue Southeast is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, fostering, rehabilitating, and finding loving forever homes for West Highland White Terriers.

Bruce is an 11-year-old Westie who was surrendered to Westie Rescue Southeast by his previous owner. After months of giving warning signs that he didn’t appreciate young kiddos in his space, Bruce ended up biting their toddler. He is being fostered in Raleigh, NC and is still looking for a place to call home where he can feel safe and be given the love and patience he needs to open up and show his true personality.

Bruce was incredibly bonded to his previous owner (a man) and through a temp foster, we’ve discovered Bruce really needs a man in the house, as this helps him feel even more relaxed, at ease, and happy.

During his 3 months in a foster home, we’ve gotten to know Bruce pretty well. Bruce does not like having his feet touched or being handled without his consent. It’s pretty easy, actually…all you need to do is ask him if he wants pets!

If you extend your hand to Bruce, he’ll lick your hand, rub his head against you, or wag his tail in excitement to show you he’s ready for affection! And if not, he’ll simply look away as if he’s saying, “not right now.” Bruce just needs a partner who will love him as he is, give him respect, and follow his lead.

Bruce will make a wonderful companion for someone who wants a chill, lowkey dog who will follow you from room to room. He may not be a touchy feely dog who wants to wrestle, be picked up, or lay all over your lap, but Bruce wants to be included! He’s content to sit next to you on the couch or lie down at your feet. And he really does love to be pet when you ask him, first!

Bruce is also house trained and crate trained and walks great on a leash. He loves nothing more than to talk a leisurely walk outside! He is around 20 pounds and HW negative. He does not like cats and much prefers to be the only dog in the house - for this reason he will need to be the only pet in the house.

This sweet senior boy is looking for his forever home where he can spend his golden years - if you think you’d be a good fit for Bruce, please submit an adoption application through Westie Rescue Southeast’s website to be considered: https://westierescuesoutheast.org/adopt-or-volunteer

Please note the following requirements to adopt Bruce:
- Fully fenced yard
- No children or grandchildren that live in the home or regularly visit (only 15+)
- No other pets (Bruce is used to being the only dog/pet in the house and likes it that way!)
- Must live within 4 hours of Raleigh, NC
- Bruce also requires a man in the house ☺️

Bruce Needs Our Help ❤️ 🐾

Our sweet senior Westie, Bruce, has been going through a difficult time, and we're asking our Westie Rescue SouthEast family to help us get him through this. Over the past week, Bruce has experienced a significant loss of appetite, gastrointestinal issues, and concerning weight loss.

What began as a visit to the veterinarian for his decreased appetite quickly turned into multiple trips to the emergency hospital, where bloodwork revealed significantly elevated liver enzymes and other abnormalities. Bruce has undergone extensive testing, including bloodwork and an abdominal ultrasound, but we still don't have a clear answer as to what's causing him to feel unwell.

While some of his bloodwork has shown improvement, our biggest concern remains that Bruce is not eating enough to sustain himself. Today, Bruce is undergoing additional bloodwork and will begin an appetite stimulant in hopes of getting him eating again. If he doesn't improve over the weekend, he'll return to the hospital on Monday for further imaging and potentially another hospitalization.

We're doing everything we can to get Bruce the answers and care he deserves, and the costs of his medical care are adding up quickly. His recent emergency hospitalization and veterinary expenses have totaled approximately $8,000, including today's visit estimated at another $600. Additional testing and hospitalization may be necessary in the coming days.

If you're able to make a donation toward Bruce's medical care, we would be incredibly grateful. Every contribution, no matter the amount, helps us continue pursuing answers and providing the treatment he needs.

🐾 Donate to Bruce's care:
- Venmo: @ WestieRescueSE
- Zelle: [email protected]
- Credit Card/PayPal: https://www.cognitoforms.com/WestieRescueSouthEast/OnlineDonationFormAndReceipt

If you're unable to donate, sharing Bruce's story and keeping him in your thoughts and prayers means so much to us, too.
Bruce is a special senior, and we're hopeful that with continued care, we'll get him feeling better and enjoying his meals again soon.

Thank you for always standing behind our Westies, especially when they need us most ❤️

⚠️ PET SAFETY PSA: DO YOU HAVE MINOXIDIL IN YOUR HOME?

Minoxidil—the active ingredient in popular hair-loss treatments is highly toxic to pets. Cats are especially sensitive, but dogs can also become seriously ill, and exposure can potentially be fatal.

And here’s the part many pet owners may not realize: your pet doesn’t have to drink it from the bottle to be exposed.

Exposure can happen if a pet:
• Licks your hair or scalp after application
• Licks even a small spill or drop
• Comes in contact with residue on your hands
• Lies on or licks a pillow, towel, bedding, or clothing contaminated with the product

If you use topical minoxidil and have pets in your home:

• Apply it somewhere your pets cannot access
• Wash your hands thoroughly afterward
• Clean up any drips or spills immediately
• Allow it to dry completely before interacting closely with your pet
• Keep treated hair away from pets
• Be mindful of pillows, bedding, towels and clothing that could have residue
• Store the product securely out of reach

If you suspect your pet has licked or come into contact with minoxidil, don’t wait for symptoms. Contact your veterinarian or a pet poison-control service immediately.

This is one of those household dangers many loving pet owners have simply never heard about. Please share—it might save a life.

Bailey has found his forever family!

When 9-year-old Bailey came to Westie Rescue Southeast, it was because his beloved mom had to move into assisted living and could no longer care for him. It was a heartbreaking change for both of them, but she wanted to make sure her boy would be loved and cared for.

And we’re so happy to share that Bailey has found just that with the wonderful Holdnak family!

Bailey is officially HOME and ready to begin this next chapter surrounded by all the love, comfort, and attention a Westie could ask for.

Congratulations, Bailey and the Holdnak family! We wish you many happy years, wonderful adventures, and lots of Westie mischief together.

Happy Tails, sweet Bailey!

We have secured a dog sitter! Thank you so much to everyone that reached out to help and shared our post.
We truly do have the best westie community. ❤️

HELP NEEDED! LAST-MINUTE FOSTER DOG SITTER IN MYRTLE BEACH!

We are reaching out to our Westie Rescue Southeast community with an urgent request, and we are hoping someone can help!

One of our wonderful foster families has a trip scheduled, and we had arranged weeks ago for a dog sitter to stay in their home and care for their foster Westie. Unfortunately, their sitter experienced a medical emergency today and has been hospitalized, leaving us scrambling to find someone at the last minute.

We would really hate for our foster family to have to cancel their trip, especially after all they do for our rescue dogs!

Here is what we need:

Dates: September 24 – October 1
Location: Myrtle Beach, SC

Our ideal solution: Someone willing to stay in the foster family's home and care for their Westie while they are away. As a bonus, their home is just HALF A MILE FROM THE BEACH!

We would also consider someone who could welcome her into their own home during those dates.
She gets along with other dogs, but she does experience anxiety in unfamiliar situations, so we are looking for someone who understands anxious dogs and can provide a calm, reassuring environment. Because of her anxiety, a traditional boarding facility is not an option. We need someone who can provide the comfort and individual attention she needs.

We have already contacted other pet sitters, but unfortunately, no one has availability.

CAN YOU HELP US MAKE THIS HAPPEN?

If you are available, or know someone trustworthy who might be able to help, please send us a private message as soon as possible.

Even if you cannot help personally, sharing this post could connect us with the right person!

Thank you for always coming through for our rescue dogs and the amazing foster families who open their hearts and homes to them.

*The foster dog is NOT available for adoption at this time. Please kindly don’t clog the messages with inquiries about adopting.**

Congratulations to Murphy and the Shipley Family!

Murphy came into rescue pretending to be a Westie mix, but underneath all that fluff, he was hiding a little secret… he was 100% miniature Schnauzer!

While he may have fooled us with his Westie disguise, he certainly won our hearts along the way!

We are thrilled to announce that Murphy has found his forever home with the wonderful Shipley family, where we know he will be loved and cherished.

Congratulations, Murphy! Your days of pretending to be a Westie are officially over, but you will always be an honorary Westie to us!

Wishing Murphy and the Shipley family a lifetime of love, laughter, and happy adventures together!

Please help us welcome our newest Westie Rescue Southeast arrival, Bailey!

Bailey is a sweet 9-year-old boy whose world has recently changed in a big way. His beloved mom had to move into assisted living and, sadly, was no longer able to care for him.

We know this was not an easy goodbye. Bailey has spent his life being loved, and now it’s our privilege to make sure he continues to know that same love and security as he begins this next chapter.

For now, Bailey is settling into rescue, getting lots of love, and giving us a chance to learn more about him and what he’ll need in his future home.

Welcome to the WRSE family, Bailey. We’ve got you from here.

Bailey is being fostered in Alabama.

If you would like to be considered for Bailey when he becomes available for adoption or any of our rescue dogs the first step is to have an application on file.
