B. Around other dogs

There's a difference between a dog knowing a command and being able to perform it reliably. 🐾

Teaching the behavior is the first step. From there, we gradually build duration, distance, and the ability to work around distractions.
In this training session, you can see the dog maintaining a down position in a public setting while the distance increases.

This kind of reliability doesn't happen overnight. It comes from clear communication, consistent practice, and gradually building on what the dog already understands.

Teach the behavior. Build understanding. Develop reliability.

A dog that knows a command in a quiet environment is off to a great start. But what happens when everyday distractions come into play? 🐾

At Patriotic Paws K9, we work with dogs in a variety of environments to help them build confidence, strengthen their obedience, and learn to stay responsive to their handler.

Whether it's practicing at the park, working outdoors, or maintaining a command while the vacuum is running, each environment presents different challenges and learning opportunities.

The goal isn't just obedience during training. It's reliable behavior that carries over into everyday life.

Before we hold a dog accountable, we need to make sure they understand what we’re asking of them.

That means taking the time to teach the behavior, practice it, reinforce it, and build understanding before expecting consistent results.

Accountability has a place in training but teaching comes first.
When dogs understand the expectations, we can begin building the consistency and reliability that carries over into everyday life. 🐾
Understanding first. Reliability follows.

One of the points Maria emphasizes when introducing a training tool is that the dog first needs to understand what it means.

In this session with Trigger, she's introducing the prong collar using light pressure and teaching him that following that pressure makes it go away.
The goal isn't to put a new tool on a dog and immediately begin correcting them. Understanding comes first.

Training tools are only one part of the process. How they're introduced, taught, and used matters.

Teach first. Then build reliability.

Building a relationship with your dog doesn’t mean letting go of structure or expectations.
Dogs benefit from both.
Relationship helps create engagement, motivation, and confidence, while clear boundaries and consistency help your dog understand what’s expected.
Good training combines trust, clear communication, and fair expectations.

Before we start asking a new dog for reliable obedience, we take time to build the relationship first. 🐾

Every dog that comes through our program is different. Getting to know the dog, understanding what motivates them, and building engagement helps create clearer communication as training progresses.

That foundation matters. We don’t just want dogs going through the motions, we want dogs that understand what’s being asked of them and are confident working with us.

Build the relationship. Then build the training.

Help us congratulate our newest Patriotic Paws graduate, Kingston! 🎓🐾
Kingston successfully completed our month-long On & Off Leash Day Training Program, where he worked on building strong obedience both on and off leash.
We’re so proud of the progress he made throughout his time with us and all the work that went into reaching this milestone!

Now Kingston gets to take those skills home and continue building on everything he’s learned with his family. ❤️🤍💙

Congratulations, Kingston! You earned it! 👏

Does your dog need to say hello to every person or dog they see? Not necessarily.

One part of socialization that can be overlooked is teaching dogs how to be neutral.

That means your dog can notice the people, movement, sounds, dogs, and other distractions around them without feeling like they need to interact with everything.

We want our dogs to learn that they can simply observe their environment, remain calm, and stay responsive to their handler.

That ability becomes especially important when we start taking training into stores, parks, neighborhoods, and other real-world environments.

Socialization isn’t only about interaction. Sometimes, it’s about learning that interaction isn’t necessary.

Does your dog know a command at home, but struggle when you add more time, move farther away, or introduce distractions?

That’s where the 3 D’s of dog training Distance, Duration & Distraction come in.

As a dog learns a skill, we can gradually make it more challenging. But that progression matters. Instead of increasing everything at once, focus on building one challenge at a time and giving your dog the opportunity to succeed.

This is how we work toward something bigger than simply knowing commands: reliable obedience that carries over into everyday life.

Swipe through for a breakdown of each of the 3 D’s and save this one for later. 🐾
