Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to post an update on my health situation after the wreck. At this time, I'm being referred to a brain injury specialist because testing so far has shown more extensive damage than originally thought. I'm going to be off work for longer than I had hoped. My return to work will depend on how long it takes for my symptoms to resolve and what the recommendations of the specialist are. In the meantime, I would encourage everyone to make arrangements to haul to one of the practices locally that will see horses or establish with someone else so that you can get your horses cared for while I am off. I have made arrangements with Virginia Tech to see my patients on an emergency basis without a referral at their facility in Blacksburg, VA. (You will have to haul to them).Their number is (540) 231-7666. I hope to see all of you soon.

Hi All,
As most know I was in a serious vehicle accident and totalled my vet truck last week. I am going to need at least a few more days off. If you have an emergency, Virginia Tech (540) 231-7666 will see the horses if you haul to them. If you need medications refilled, please leave a message with my answering service and I can get someone to help with those. If you need to schedule an appointment that isn't urgent leave a message with the service and I can get back to you when I can. Please be patient with me. I will be doing the best I can.

Please read. This doesn't mention feeding horses on a farm that also feeds cattle. Horses cannot handle monensin. If your cattle or other livestock feed does contain monensin please be careful. Many of us run our horses on cattle farms. It's easier than you think to have an issue with horses getting into the wrong feed.

Watch your horses closely for soreness if they are already prone to laminitis. The grass is severely stressed due to the dry conditions and may be richer than it normally would be this time of year once we get some rain and the grass starts to grow.

There is currently a small suspected strangles outbreak in Gilmer County, WV. The horses known to be affected at this time are on 2 locations and are quarantined. They are trail horses that have been to group trail rides in Gilmer County, WV and to a ride at Camp Creek State Park in the last few weekends before showing any symptoms. If you think your horses have been in contact with any of the affected animals please monitor temperatures closely as well as for cough, nasal discharge and swelling under the
jaw. If you notice any symptoms please contact your veterinarian immediately and do not travel with your horses.

There is a vaccination for strangles but it is not in the core vaccines that most horses receive. If you would like your horse vaccinated please call (304) 619-0076 to schedule an appointment.
