Our appointment book is computerized which allows us to efficiently make appointments for you and your pet. Our recepti

onists and friendly staff will attempt to accommodate all requests to the best of our ability. Emergencies are accepted anytime our clinic is open. If you feel you have an emergency with your pet, please call us or come to the hospital immediately. If possible it is best to call before coming in so that a staff member can advise you on your particular emergency. We are open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5:30 PM and every Saturday from 8 am to noon.

Today our team completed our semiannual CPR training to keep our lifesaving skills sharp and be ready when our patients need us most.

The good news? Both our brave practice patients—the chicken and the gingerbread cookie—made a full recovery thanks to our amazing team! ❤️🐔🍪

The 4th of July is almost here! 🇺🇸🎆

Don't forget to make sure your pet's anxiety medication is filled and ready before the holiday. Fireworks can be stressful for many pets, and even if your furry friend doesn't usually seem anxious, unexpected loud noises can still cause fear. It's always better to be prepared!

Here are a few ways to help keep your pet safe and comfortable this Independence Day:
🐾 Keep pets indoors during fireworks.
🐾 Create a quiet, cozy space with their favorite bed or blanket.
🐾 Close windows, curtains, and blinds to help reduce noise and flashes.
🐾 Play calming music or turn on the TV to help mask fireworks sounds.
🐾 Make sure collars and ID tags are up to date, and confirm your pet's microchip information is current.
🐾 Exercise your dog earlier in the day before festivities begin.
🐾 Keep party foods, alcohol, chocolate, grapes, onions, and corn cobs out of reach.
🐾 Never bring pets to fireworks displays.

This handsome guy is Woody, a dog recently adopted by Dr. Sutton from a local shelter. Just a few weeks after joining his new family, Woody tested positive for heartworm disease.

Many pet owners are surprised to learn that a dog can test negative for heartworms (as he did at the shelter) and then test positive shortly afterward. That's because heartworms have a long life cycle. When an infected mosquito bites a dog, it transmits immature heartworm larvae. These larvae take about 6-7 months to mature into adult heartworms. Heartworm tests detect proteins from adult female heartworms, so if a dog was infected recently, the infection may not show up on a test yet.

One of the most fascinating findings in Woody's case was seeing microfilaria under the microscope! Microfilaria are tiny baby heartworms that circulate in the bloodstream after adult heartworms reproduce. In the video attached in the comments, you can actually see these microscopic parasites moving through a drop of Woody's blood.
While heartworm disease can sound scary, the good news is that it is preventable. Cases like Woody's are exactly why we recommend year-round heartworm prevention for all dogs. Prevention is safe, effective, and much easier (and less painful) than treating an established infection.

The even better news? Woody couldn't be in better hands. Dr. Sutton and our team have already developed a treatment plan, and he'll be receiving the very best care every step of the way.
