August in Florida may feel too hot and steamy to do anything outside, but it's time to start planting your fall garden. Even though it's hotter than ideal right now for fall crops, gardeners in North and Central Florida have to plant early enough so crops mature before frost.
With the intense heat this time of year, soil dries out quickly, so keep new plantings watered well until they get established.

For most of the state, here's what to put in the ground this month: beans, eggplant (transplants), okra, southern peas, peppers (transplants), squash, tomatoes (transplants) and watermelon. If you didn't get your tomatoes, peppers and eggplant seeds started by the end of July, you've still got time in the first few days of August, especially in the Central and Southern parts of the state.

Perennial vegetables that can be planted throughout the year include achira, aibika, cassava, chaya, katuk, longevity spinach, moringa, Okinawa spinach, sissoo spinach and tindora. In North Florida, all of these will require some winter protection.

In North Florida, in addition to the above items, you can also plant beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, Chinese cabbage, collards, cucumbers, kale, mustard and turnips this month, but skip the okra and southern peas. You can put in seeds or plants of any of the cool-season crops.

In Central Florida, get ready to start cool-season crops in small pots or seed flats. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, collards, kale, mustard and turnips can be seeded near the end of the month for transplanting to the garden late next month.

In South Florida you can also still plant pumpkins early in the month, but wait another month to plant your beans. Sweet potatoes and Seminole pumpkins can be planted anytime this month.

PATIENCE, MOISTURE MANAGEMENT AND MORINGA SEEDLING PERSISTENCE POST:

As an educator and small scale researcher, it is important for me to pass along not only Pjd research factual data, but also grower experience stressing out seedlings and plants so you also have real World, current, Florida grow zone 9a/b tested practices. Procenance matters and tweaking the production parameters significantly influences EVERYTHING downstream.

PATIENCE is key with abundant prolific Moringa which is almost always NEVER dead unless heavily wet soils have made fungal colonies proliferate beyond repair. This is 90% of client amd student Moringa death...winter doesnt kill Moringa...take a class or host a workshop to lesrn more.
Have cleaered land not being used? Become a Moringa John grow partner and catapult health and wellness in your community!! DM for details.

**The pics below are several current examples of resprouting after seedling wilt, stem rot, etc...I added half strength plant food every other moistening (NEVER WATER STRESSED OR DORMANT/HEALING PLANTS...MOISTEN) and little by little new sprouts emerge here and there from barren surfaces. Rootballs are stunning life storage and managing plant parts redirecting and.invigorating our "Moracle Tree"!**

Stay patience and learn water management vs moisture management to become a better steward of Earths most nutrient dense edible leaf!!

MORINGA JOHN GROW TIP POST!
SEEDLINGS CHAPTER

1. Start your seed in the final home plot/pot/Greenhouse etc. Moringa HATES being moved around amd time is wasted in shock recovery more than necessary. STOP using seed trays or.sm pots firstand direct seed.

Fun Fact: Moringa seed in bulk is so cheap and the plant so useful and beneficial, a Canadian farmer grows it as an ANNUAL CROP over many acres every year storing the excess for off-season multiple farm inputs and local sales and buys seed again.the following year!

2 Really be mindful of over-moistening young seedlings and plants!! Wet soil against the baby green trunks makes them especially vulberable to Stem Rot, a.collection of opportunistic fungi making a black/brown ring around the trunk cutting off 100% water/nutrition, its done at that point and eventually will spread killing all of it

3. IF THIS HAPPENS DO NOT PANIC!! Over 50% can and will resprout. Cut/prune WITH SANITIZED BLADE (NEVER FINGERS) all the way below the black/brown ring even if its at soil level. If shoots do not appear in 3 or 4 days give 1/2 drink water to make sure seed bulb left over in sool stays moist and be patient.

4 When shoots appear on next water cycle use a half strength plant food (use the best you have or ask a friend/group/FB club) and dont make wet soil, but just so that roots dont dry out. Remember roots go deep VERY quickly, straight down. We never drown babies in milk all at once, they sip more frequently...

5 We still cover soil in Florida as a standard practice, but with Moringa seedlings and sapplings NEVER let soil cover touch main stalks until mature plant bark forms, usually from 6th-9th month.

6. NEVER buy live plants thru the mail. Overpriced profiteers and fad chasers for quick cash want $5-$10 per baby plant and I've seen up to $60 for larger potted older ones!!...INFURIATING AND REDICULOUS WASTE OF MONEY! Buy seed. Find your spot and prep soil, and DIRECT SEED 3X-10X what you think you need...this plant can heal communities and IS SO EASY TO SPROUT AND GROW!

OVER AND OUT!
MORINGA JOHN

PS MARKETPLACE sellers have becone abusive in their prices, one seller in Central Flpmorida wants $80/lb for powder by trying to outsmart and charge $5oz!!
Another seller is selling 3 branches with leaves for $3...WHAT?!.. Only 22% is leaf so now we're selling goat food??!! hardly any nitritional gains and WAY overpriced...
NEVER.buy branches fresh, ALWAYS just leaf and at 6:1 fresh to dey powder ratio, thats 6lbs freah to mske 1lb powder whih isa 6 week supply for 1 adult...BUYER BEWARE! LIES FOR A FEW BUCKS!

PPS Individual Coaching available as a reasonable monthly support from beginner hobbyist farmsteader farmer etc...
not 1 person or company production reviewed has research backed best practices protocols maximizing production harvesting or processing standards!! "Ive been geowing for 15 years." is NOT a factual protocol standard!!! iykyk

BUYER BEWARE! dont get me started on the capsules hipocrisy!!

MEDICINAL MORINGA PROTOCOLS ACTIVATION!

Heres a good initial explanation of how and why Fresh Moringa leaves get elevated into powerful medicinal potential!! Anything less is highly nutritional still BUT these powerhouse compounds will NOT activate unless one follows these preparation steps...

IYKYK
...clickbait opportunists will steal others research backed years of work for personal profits!!! Pirates did the same...Buyer Beware!

Why did traditional healers insist on crushing fresh Moringa leaves instead of simply drying them?

Because one of Moringa's most potent medicinal compounds doesn't exist until the crushing begins.

🌿 MORINGA (MORINGA OLEIFERA) — THE ACTIVATED HEALER

You aren't looking at a simple garden plant. You are looking at a biochemical system—a store of glucomoringin and myrosinase—engineered so that the moment the leaf is crushed, two naturally separated components meet and create one of the plant's most important defense molecules.

This plant governs three primary defensive lanes:

🔹 The Transformation Engine: Using the enzyme myrosinase to convert inactive precursors into moringin, a signature isothiocyanate that orchestrates systemic cellular defense.

🔹 The Nrf2 Activator: Using moringin to switch on the body’s internal "master antioxidant" network, boosting the production of glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase.

🔹 The Metabolic Shield: Using a complex array of quercetin, chlorogenic acid, and phenolic compounds to protect vascular integrity and stabilize insulin sensitivity.

🧪 THE DEFENSIVE PATHWAYS

Moringa targets the molecular switches where chronic inflammation and cellular "rusting" intersect.

📍 THE TRANSFORMATION ENGINE — BIOCHEMICAL ACTIVATION

Inside the leaf, glucomoringin and the enzyme myrosinase are kept apart. Crushing the leaf brings them together, triggering a rapid conversion into moringin. This is not an extraction; it is a synthesis. Moringin serves as a potent signaling molecule that suppresses the NF-ÎşB inflammatory "switch" while simultaneously signaling the body to produce its own protective enzymes.

📍 THE NRF2 ACTIVATOR — INTERNAL DEFENSE RENEWAL

Rather than acting as a simple antioxidant that "cleans up" a few free radicals, moringin acts as a master regulator. By activating the Nrf2 pathway, it prompts cells to manufacture their own robust antioxidant defenses. This creates a state of systemic resilience, protecting mitochondria, DNA, and proteins from the oxidative damage associated with aging and metabolic stress.

📍 THE METABOLIC SHIELD — VASCULAR STABILIZATION

Beyond the moringin pathway, the fresh leaf juice (succus) carries a rich profile of flavonoids and minerals. These compounds operate in concert to protect blood vessels from oxidative stress and improve the body’s metabolic response to carbohydrates, ensuring that systemic energy signaling remains stable and efficient.

🧬 THE PHYSIOLOGICAL SHIFT

The power of fresh Moringa is its dynamic functionality. It is not just the presence of compounds that matters, but the act of preparation that unlocks the plant's true pharmacological potential.

Use this understanding when you want to:

Support the body's internal antioxidant production (Nrf2 pathway)

Regulate chronic inflammatory signaling

Promote healthy metabolic and vascular stability

The inflammatory master switch quiets.

The cellular defense network activates.

The metabolic environment stabilizes.

The body’s protective rhythm is restored.
