As I have been showcasing the Exercise Excursion Program often recently I wanted to showcase some of our other services we offer starting off with my Gun-dog Training Program.

🟢The Gun-dog Training Program is centralized for the puppy that is 4 to 6 months of age in which your goal is to the build a confident hunting partner or excellent hunt tester.
🟢This program can be customized to be done as 1-to-1 private lessons or via boarding and training.
🟢All programs are customized to the parents individual goals and needs for the partner.

What's going on with us on the weekends? We typically are working on behaviors with friends or individually. We got an oppurtunity to work on scentwork exterior hides.

This setup includes a barrier hide, elevated hides, and crack hides. From this we got to see that we need to work more on elevated hides to give her more confidence in hides such as the last one.

This video looks a little strange if you don't know what's going on. What do you think we're working on?

1️⃣Clapping abilities
2️⃣Steadiness around loud sounds
3️⃣Getting someone's attention

If you said number 2 then you were right. Our board and train, Mag's, showed some difficulty staying with the sound of the launcher. So we changed the difficulty by removing the launcher entirely and work on staying with louder sounds which could excite her. Her staying put here is pivotal for us to continue gunfire training.

What do you do when the dog fails a repetition? As you practice behaviors in training it is always possible for the repetition of the behavior to be a successsful run. But here's some tips to keep in mind if this happens.

1️⃣Stay Calm
2️⃣If possible interrupt the behavior (certain situations are not best to interrupt)
3️⃣ Reset and try again
4️⃣If they continue to fail, the difficulty of the behavior needs to be decreased

For an example, in this video we see my Board & Train, Mags, she gets overly excited to retrieve the bumper with the duck wing and runs in before being released. So I call her back to return and release her to retrieve. What this video doesn't show is that prior to this retrieve and the one following it she maintained the position. However, I make sure to adjust my training plan to keep the clarity of maintaining the place until released.

We still are accepting pups for our Exercise Excursion Program! If you have a dog who:

✅Loves the outdoors
✅Friendly with people

This program will be perfect them. We go on a 3 hour adventure to the appropriate place for their needs to let them explore, run, sniff, and learn. We work on small behaviors including recall, impulse control, and leash skills.

It's been a busy past week but the fun continues through the weekend.

Lace and I are heading to Lafayette to instruct the shed portion of Bayou Dog Sports NASDA workshop. It will be a fun filled weekend as always!

Update on Miss Mags. She’s come a far way from day one. We are building on the foundations as well as laying foundations for more advanced skills.

✅Whistle Recall
✅Whistle Stop
✅Gunfire Introduction
✅Retrieve to Place/Hand
✅Walking Heel
✅Retrieve bumper with duck wing

Our goal is to move into the finally behaviors she will need for her first season very soon. Stay tuned for further updates.

How do I introduce gunfire to the young gun-dog? Well there is in fact no gun-fire actually involved.

We start with "loud" sounds around the dog keeping the activities fun and light. This can be done in multiple different ways.

✅A fireworks playlist played during training or playtime.
✅Hand Clapping during simple retrieves
✅General noises such as door closing while the dog is paying attention.

If the dog shows any anxiety or fearful behaviors we reduce the criteria by either decreasing the volume or distance from the dog.

Let’s welcome this cutie into the program! Everyone meet Pepper! 💛

Pepper is joining my Exercise Excursion program to help manage her high energy needs. During her outing we also practiced her impulse control around small animals (squirrels and rabbits). 🐇 As well as her recall skills. 🏃

Needless to say she loved the outing! Her review would likely say the mud was the highest quality and the squirrels were the cherry on top.

Can’t wait to see her again!
