We just had some more done this month and are pending OFAās evaluation! š
Why official OFA hips matter ā¬ļø
⢠Hip dysplasia is common in Golden Retrievers and often appears later in life
⢠Preliminary OFAs are predictive onlyāhips can change as a dog matures
⢠Official OFA hips are done at full skeletal maturity for an accurate evaluation
⢠Final results are reviewed by multiple board-certified radiologists and permanently recorded
⢠Breeding only dogs with passing final OFA hips helps reduce pain, arthritis, and mobility issues in future generations
Prelims are a toolānot a green light to breed.
If you are looking for a Golden Retriever puppy, be sure the breeder has official OFA certification for the parent dogs. Golden Retrievers should have this for hips, elbows, eyes and cardiac.
The GRCA Code of Ethics requests that results from hip, elbow, eye, and heart examinations be placed in the public record on searchable databases, and the most widely used of such databases is provided by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals at www.offa.org. Breeders often describe their dogs as āhip, elbow, eye, and heart certifiedā or as having āall their clearancesā and these statements should be verified on the OFA website.
Records can be accessed by searching using the dogās full registered name (with exact spelling) or registration number, and reputable breeders should not hesitate to provide you with this information.
We will address other necessary testing like elbows in future posts- stay tuned!
