🦷 February is National Animal Dental Health Month 🦷

Horses of all ages should have sedated oral speculum exams once or twice a year. Young horses start shedding their deciduous teeth around the age of 2 1/2, and should be monitored for appropriate alignment and excursion. As horses age, malocclusions may inhibit proper chewing motions and create uneven wear patterns. Adult and geriatric horses are at risk for chronic changes and fractures.

Schedule your equine companion’s oral examination and dental float in the month of February to receive 10% off the procedure. Animals currently enrolled in a Guardian Care Plan can combine discounts!

🦷 February is National Animal Dental Health Month 🦷

Remember: just because your horse is not showing any obvious symptoms of dental disease, it does not automatically mean that all is well with your animal's oral health. Horses simply adapt to their discomfort and most horses with dental problems will show no noticeable signs at all, until the disease is a serious source of pain and infection that can affect the animal’s overall health.

Equine dentistry is not just about “floating” teeth. Dentistry is a veterinary discipline that, besides treating the mouth and teeth, also includes the associated structures of the head – for instance the sinuses – and the effect of dental diseases on the health of the rest of the body. That is why all horses should have a veterinarian perform an oral and dental examination at least annually (or more frequently based on the needs of the individual horse.)

Contact Guardian Equine Veterinary Services today to schedule a dental examination for your equine companion.

What's New Wednesday: BIO-THERMO MICROCHIPS!

Microchips are a small, safe, inexpensive form of permanent form of identification for animals. In horses, this device is implanted into the left side of the nuchal ligament, directly under the mane and last the lifetime of the horse.

Microchips are an asset for reuniting owners with animals during natural disasters and accidents as well as tracing disease outbreaks, monitoring travel and prevention of fraud at competitions. Many breed and discipline registries require microchips for competition.

In addition to storing a unique ID number, biothermal microchips also have a built in temperature sensor, which can be utilized to increase compliance and safety in monitoring horse health.

Call/text or email the office today to schedule your horse to be microchipped.

❄️Hampton Roads Horse People, shivering your shoes off, here are some important tips and reminders from AAEP to keep your equine companions safe during extreme weather. ❄️

1. While lots of hay is ideal for horses to eat to keep warm, now is NOT the time to introduce a round bale if they’ve never had access to one before. It may be more work, but keep throwing them their normal hay source, just more frequently.

2. Similarly, if your horse is not used to being in a stall, now is NOT the time. The stress of a major change and the decreased activity can be risk factors for colic. Be sure they have access to shelter, hay, and drinkable water but let them move around if they choose to do so.

3. Horses that are thin, older, or fully body clipped are those most at risk in extreme weather.

4. Well-fitting blankets are great but be sure that horses do not get sweaty under them, or that the blankets don’t soak through if snow or rain covered. Wet, cold and covered is worse than dry, cold and naked.

5. Some of the highest risk times are when the temperatures hover right around freezing, as that can result in sleet/freezing rain/ice that can make horses wet and therefore colder. Slippery footing is a concern, too.

6. If using electric water heaters, be sure they are functioning and not shocking horses. Take your gloves off and stick your hand in the water (briefly!!!) to double check.

7. Entice your horses to consume extra water by flavoring a bucket, adding electrolytes to their meals, or soaking their meals in warm water.

8. The tips of your horses' ears can be at risk for frostbite. Putting on a WATERPROOF ear bonnet or other WATERPROOF ear covering can protect them from wind chills.

Stay Safe, Stay Warm, and Stay HYDRATED!
