Everyone was loving the beautiful weather today! Including boarding pups Val, Cooper and Charlie Brown (one of our previous fosters! 🥰), and current foster momma Chicken! Brought out the splash pad for an additional chance to cool off.

Nothing like using the cows as obstacle equipment 😅 This is certainly not something I would encourage, but a good way to show how comfortable the dogs and cows are with each other. Haru and Mochi have been around more dogs than most dogs have, and they aren't phased by much now, Fae and Atlas have grown up around them and are obviously quite comfortable around them. As I said, this isn't a behavior I would encourage, but if I overreact to them playing like this I could actually spook the cows and cause an issue, so instead if they play too close I will just call the pups away.

Fae is loving having Atlas back at the house! Atlas is with us while he works on some touch up with his listening and settling skills. Can you believe the puppies are 5 months old already?!

Living on a busy road, we like to take advantage of weird noises and things going on when we can. Today we had cherry picker trucks and a police officer going slowly down the road to work on the electrical lines. I took out Fae as I always like to see how she feels about new things. She was a little rock star and wasn't bothered at all.

We also worked with Smitty, who is in for a board and train to work on some human and dog reactivity and build his confidence. He was not quite as sold on this new thing so we worked through it, walking him around, keeping some distance and guiding him through. I don't want to leave a dog like him to just fixate on the new scary thing as he will start to react, and I don't want him practicing that. Instead I focus on practicing appropriate behaviors, disengaging with the scary thing, engaging with me, sniffing the ground, etc.

The babies have both opened their eyes! At 3 weeks they are also gaining their hearing. With their ears being open and starting to gain more mobility they get a new experience or item in their whelping box every day. We also practice their startle and recovery to loud noises. At this age puppies don't have an actual fear response, that tends to start around 5 weeks, but they can startle. So we practice hearing loud noises and recovering from them to make it so they don't get as stressed by unexpected noises when they are older.
We are also starting potty training them! Adding a litter pad not only makes clean up easier, but ultimately will make potty training them easier too, as well as decreasing the probability of them being 'dirty dogs' that will go to the bathroom where they sleep and eat.

If you raise puppies, whether as a breeder or as a foster parent, these steps make such a difference in the stability and trainability of your puppies, especially in rescue situations where we do not have control over genetics, but we can give some help to epigenetics, or how genes express based off of lived experience.

Fae and Zuko did exceptional today at Jr’s paws for a cause 5k. Zuko loved the run and Fae loved meeting new adults, kiddos and dogs. Congratulations to Anthony and Zuko for running a wicked fast, and fun, race!

After that the pups took a break while we grabbed a snack and then practiced public access work at The Natick Mall. Fae is so delightfully social and confident with everyone, but also knows how to focus and work, even in big crowds. Proud of this little lady who isn't even 5 months old yet! Girl worked hard and is down for a big nap now.

Practicing with this helps so she's not running away if she grabs something in the yard, builds retrieve (which is great for fetch, but also can become a service dog task), and significantly reduces risk of resource guarding and stealing items.

Puppies naturally have a phase where they like to grab things, working with that I find is way easier than fighting it, so now Fae at least happily brings me things she picks up.

You can also see how easily this behavior can become 'keep away' as she starts to play that game when she thinks Doug may take her precious stick.

Nugget opened his eyes yesterday! We are still waiting for Noodle to open his eyes. The puppies are 17 days old now, all done with ENS and ESI as of yesterday, but they are now working on other things like nail trims, individual time, and will even start potty training soon! When their ears open in a few days we will also start with sound introduction and startle and recovery exercises.

Fae absolutely loved her first trip to the mall, as you can see from all the smiles 😄

Practiced walking with her handler, autositting, ignoring distractions, and under (tucking under legs/a chair when handler is sitting).

Let's talk about preventing unwanted (dog) pregnancies.

Dogs come into heat on average every 6 months. This starts from the time they are 6 months for some smaller dogs, up to 18 months for some large dogs. You will usually see bloody discharge, swollen v***a, if you have other dogs in the house they may also take more interest in your female, even if they are neutered. Females in heat may show behavior changes, and could be more clingy, anxious or aggressive.

The bleeding stage typically lasts for 10- 16 days, after that the breeding stops but they are still swollen. This is the time you need to be extra careful as that is when they are the most likely to get pregnant. Unfortunately many people misunderstand the end of bleeding to be the end of fertility, but it is actually the beginning of it, this phase can last 10 days.

To keep your dog safe when they are in heat- do not let them outside unsupervised, even in a fenced yard, male dogs can dig under, jump over or even mate through fences. Male dogs can also smell a female in heat from miles away, even if there isn't an intact dog in your neighborhood that does not make you safe.

If you have an intact male in your house (I would not recommend it, it is not worth the risk), they should have multiple solid boundaries between them at a time during this entire period- different rooms with closed doors, separated by crates, etc. This is where we most often see management fail, especially in multi-human households with kids or significant others letting dogs out and being unaware of the concern.

Diapers and wraps do not protect dogs from accidental pregnancies, similar to fences, it is easy for dogs to work around.

Intact dogs should never be left unsupervised together when a female is in heat, they can lock in seconds.

Size difference, etc are not things dogs care much about, if there is a will there is a way, don't assume your small male can't get to your large female.

Dogs should not be bred without extensive health testing (OFA Hips & elbow X-rays, cardiac exams, eye exams, knee exam, thyroid check etc depending on breed or mix), genetic testing and proving an exceptional temperament, this is often done with a variety of sports and show titles but could be with therapy, comfort or service work, hunting skills, search and rescue, etc. A pet having a decent temperament is unfortunately not enough to warrant breeding them.

There is also significant risk to your female dog during pregnancy, pregnancy can fail and go septic, puppies get stuck and require emergency csections, placentas rupture, they can get mastitis or preeclampsia.

If you are not able to heavily manage your dog 2x a year for approximately a month, please do not have an intact female. It is a large responsibility. Pictured is Nessie, who underwent extensive health and genetic testing, is seen by a reproductive vet, does multiple sports, therapy work and helper work, and Chicken, our current foster momma. She is an absolutely lovely dog, but her owners could not responsibly keep her from another dog and this is her second litter at only a year and a half old.

If you are unable to keep dogs apart and do not have the resources to spay them, please do not have intact dogs. There are so many accidental litters every year which are absolutely avoidable. Thankfully Chicken is with us and her puppies are being carefully raised and will be carefully placed to give them their best life. Chicken will also be spayed after this, but not all dogs or puppies are so lucky.
