Focusing on wellness, one small miracle at a time 🐾 Small Miracles Animal Hospital is a privately owned practice rooted in philanthropic beliefs. We are “Cat Friendly” and employ “Fear Free” principles. Primarily, we strive to keep our patients healthy and make sick animals well, while providing comfort to their concerned families. We love that we take care of our patients from babies through adulthood. When it is time, we gently help them onto their next chapter beyond this life. As we are a private company, we can practice exceptional care, based on doctor recommendations (not corporate standard operating procedures), at fair prices. 🐾🩵 Happy Veterinary Technician Week! 🩵🐾

This week, we're celebrating the veterinary technicians who do SO much to care for our patients every day.

They're drawing blood, running lab work, monitoring anesthesia, taking X-rays, assisting with procedures, giving medications, caring for hospitalized pets, answering questions, comforting nervous patients, and doing about 47 other things behind the scenes that you may never even see.

They're there for the nervous pets, the complicated cases, the busy treatment days, and all the little things that keep everything running smoothly.

Veterinary medicine truly couldn't function without them.

So this week, please join us in giving some extra appreciation to our amazing vet techs for the skill, knowledge, patience, and compassion they bring to our patients and their families every single day. 🩵

🎃 Pumpkin Isn’t Just for Fall Decorations

Plain pumpkin can actually be a useful addition to some pets’ diets 🐾

Pumpkin contains fiber and moisture, which can help support normal digestion. Veterinarians sometimes recommend small amounts of plain pumpkin for dogs or cats dealing with mild stool changes because the fiber can help add bulk to loose stool and may also help keep things moving when stools are a little too firm.

A few important distinctions, though:

🎃 Plain canned pumpkin: Yep!
🎃 Plain cooked pumpkin: Also fine!
🥧 Pumpkin pie filling: Nope. It contains added sugar and spices and isn’t the same thing.
🍂 Pumpkin-spice everything: Your pet does not need to participate 😂

And more isn't necessarily better: too much pumpkin can cause digestive upset, and ongoing diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, loss of appetite, or other symptoms 🤢 So keep in mind that this is a small add, not a huge effort.

Halloween Decoration Check 🎃

We're still a few weeks out from Halloween, which means decorations are starting to appear.

If you've got pets, look at your setup from approximately four inches off the floor. 😂

Can they reach:

🔌 electrical cords
🕯️ candles
🧵 strings/ribbons
🕸️ fake spiderweb material
🎃 small decorations they could chew or swallow
🍫 chocolate, sweets, cannabis, or alcohol

Cats in particular did not (and will not) receive the memo that your carefully arranged decorations are not enrichment activities 😆

Is your pet's microchip info still up to date?

Here's a job that takes about five minutes and is extremely easy to forget:

Check your pet's microchip registration.

A microchip doesn't help much if the phone number attached to it belonged to you three addresses ago.

Make sure:

📱 your phone number is current
🏠 your address is current
📧 your email is current
👤 your emergency contact is still correct

Not sure how to check it?

🔎 Find your pet's microchip number. Check your adoption paperwork, microchip paperwork, or veterinary records. If you can't find it, your vet can scan your pet and give you the number.

💻 Enter the chip number into the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool. It can tell you which registry or registries have information associated with that chip.

⌨ Go to the registry listed and log into your account, or contact the company directly.

🏠 Review your information and update anything that's changed.

☝️ One important thing: the AAHA lookup tool does not show your personal contact information or update the chip for you. It helps you figure out which registry you need to contact.

And if the chip was implanted but never registered, this is a very good time to fix that too ✅

Sometimes the best part of your dog's walk isn't actually the walking....

It's the sniffing 🐶

Dogs gather an enormous amount of information through scent, so stopping to investigate a tree for what feels to you like an unreasonable amount of time 😅 is part of how they experience the world.

If your dog's health and mobility allow it, try a walk this week where you're not trying to cover a particular distance.

Let them choose the pace.
Let them sniff.
Let them investigate.

You may not cover as much distance, but your pup will love being able to really check out all of those smells 🔎

Cats are very good at making us believe:

“Oh, she just doesn't drink much water.”

And some genuinely don't drink much from a bowl, especially if they're getting moisture through wet food.

But it still helps to know where your cat prefers to drink.

Some like fountains.
Some prefer wide bowls that don't touch their whiskers.
Some require the bathroom faucet to be turned on like they're staying at a resort 💆‍♀️

Where does YOUR cat actually drink?

🥣 Bowl
⛲ Fountain
🚰 Faucet
🐈 Somewhere weird

(p.s. If you're ever concerned about whether your cat is drinking enough water, or if their drinking habits change, it's a great opportunity to check in with your vet for a wellness appointment!)

Post op Fear Free when... chemical restraint wasn't enough, he doesn't like his cage, he doesn't want to be with the Cpls, doesn't want to be in the penthouse, doesn't want to sit next to us with a leash and doesn't want to sit on our laps. FINALLY...rest for everyone!
