Snorting, snoring, and noisy breathing may be common in French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, Shih Tzus, Boxers, and other short-nosed breeds, but they should not always be considered normal.
These sounds can be signs of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, or BOAS, a condition that restricts airflow and makes breathing more difficult.
BOAS can become especially dangerous during hot and humid weather. Because dogs rely on panting to cool themselves, brachycephalic breeds may struggle to regulate their body temperature when their airways are already narrowed.
Signs of BOAS may include:
• Loud snoring or noisy breathing
• Exercise intolerance
• Gagging or retching
• Difficulty recovering after activity
• Increased breathing effort in warm weather
• Heavy panting, weakness, collapse, or blue-gray gums
For some dogs, surgical correction of narrowed nostrils, an elongated soft palate, or other obstructive tissues can improve airflow and help them breathe more comfortably.
