Yesterday was all about the puppies. An emergency c-section was started at 10AM on Timber. She is a beautiful chocolate lab that had been trying since around 5AM to give birth. She had one live puppy at home, then her progress stopped. She was prepped and surgery began with Doc at the helm and Makayla assisting. We knew the puppies were going to be big based on the x-rays, but, these puppies were BIG! As the first puppy was removed, it was given to Paula to massage, clean the airways, and make sure it was OK after being in there so long. The third puppy at first appeared to be dead. Work on it was doubled, soon she was breathing and making those sweet puppy sounds. The 4th puppy was taken, and then the 5th. The 5th had been the problem. He was huge and blocking the others. As Doc and Makayla worked to get Timber squared away, Paula kept working on the puppies. She soon had a basket full of 6 squirming, mewling, beautiful puppies. It was wonderful to give Momma and her live babies back to the owner in the afternoon. He had feared they would not survive. Talk about excited!!! We will get to see these pups several times in the coming weeks and we can hardly wait!! Then, as we were still on our puppy high, another basket of puppies came in to have their dewclaws removed. We got to love on more puppies!!!! And we will see them again in just a few weeks. What a day at the clinic!!!! Yes, we love our job!!!
