You cannot collect energy that doesn't exist. This is why impulsion comes first. The horse must be genuinely forward — not fast, not tense, but moving with energy that comes from behind and travels through the back — before collection becomes possible. Riders who try to collect a horse that isn't through yet end up holding a shape. The hindquarters don't engage. The back doesn't swing. The horse is smaller, but not lighter. Forward first. Then ask the hindquarters to carry more. That sequence is not negotiable.
