Hero

My fishing boat flipped over in the middle of a Wisconsin lake one quiet morning, and I went into the water unconscious — I'd hit my head, I never even felt it happen.

By every law of physics, and every word the doctors said afterward, that should have been the end of a sixty-year-old man fishing alone.

Except I had a six-pound Chihuahua on that boat.

And he did a thing nobody could explain.

My name is Hank. I’m a retired widower living in rural Wisconsin, where life moves a little slower and peace is measured in quiet mornings on the lake.

For years, fishing was my escape.

Just me, a small pontoon boat, a thermos of coffee, and the sunrise reflecting across the water.

Then came Captain.

Captain was my Chihuahua.

Tiny body. Giant personality.

He rode with me every single morning, sitting proudly in the captain’s seat like he owned the lake. Folks at the marina laughed whenever they saw him perched up front with those oversized ears catching the breeze.

That’s how he got his name.

He wasn’t just my dog.

He was my fishing partner.

My best friend.

My family.

Now here’s the part that matters.

Captain wasn’t a swimmer.

Like most Chihuahuas, he preferred dry land, warm blankets, and staying as far away from deep water as possible.

The lake made him nervous.

He tolerated boat rides because he loved being with me.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

So when we headed out one calm summer morning, neither of us had any idea our lives were about to change forever.

The water was still.

The sky was clear.

The world felt perfect.

Then something went wrong.

A sudden shift.

A sharp movement.

A second of bad luck.

The boat tipped.

I hit my head.

And everything went black.

I don’t remember falling into the water.

I don’t remember sinking.

I don’t remember fighting to stay alive.

Because I never got the chance.

I was unconscious before I even knew what happened.

Everything I know comes from the people who found us later.

An unconscious man in open water doesn't survive long.

The doctors told me that.

The rescue workers told me that.

I should have drowned within minutes.

But Captain refused to let that happen.

Witnesses later said they saw something unbelievable near the shoreline.

A tiny Chihuahua swimming frantically beside a drifting man.

Again and again, he pushed against my shoulder.

Again and again, he grabbed at my shirt.

Again and again, he refused to leave me.

For nearly an hour, that little dog stayed beside me in the water, barking nonstop until nearby boaters heard him.

The sound carried across the lake.

One fisherman finally turned his boat toward the barking.

What he found stunned everyone.

A Chihuahua refusing to abandon his unconscious owner.

The rescuers reached me just in time.

CPR started on the shore.

An ambulance arrived.

And somehow...

I survived.

The doctors called it a miracle.

The boaters called it loyalty.

I call it love.

Because while bigger dogs might have had the strength to drag me to shore, Captain had something even stronger.

He had a heart that simply refused to give up.

Six pounds.

Two tiny paws.

One enormous act of devotion.

People often ask me why I still take Captain fishing.

The answer is simple.

Every sunrise on that lake feels like a gift now.

And every gift deserves to be shared with the little hero who made it possible.

So these days, Captain still rides in the captain’s chair.

Still watches the water.

Still acts like he owns the lake.

And honestly?

After saving my life...

I think he does. ❤️

Due to the layout of our Cat Adopt room, Oni's kennel may very well be the very last one you visit. In it, you'll see this handsome, 2-year-old, grey-and-white boy watching you and hoping you'll give him some attention. It's obvious he's friendly and sweet, but what no one would ever guess is how close Oni came to not being here.

We see a lot of cats arrive in what can easily be described as "rough shape," but that description doesn't accurately portray how dire Oni's condition was. He arrived in great pain and suffering from a urethra obstruction -- a life-threatening condition that causes severe electrolyte imbalances and organ damage. He was in urgent need of treatment.

Oni was barely conscious and had a heart rate of over 200 beats per minute. HSWC's veterinary team sprang into action, providing him pain medication, placing a catheter to relieve the obstruction, and removed 90-100mL of bloody urine from his bladder. Bloodwork revealed that he had severe hyperkalemia (high potassium) and a number of other concerning electrolyte imbalances. Our veterinary team worked hard to provide Oni fluids and medications, but his prognosis was poor. A normal BUN (blood urea nitrogen) level for cats is between 16 and 36 mg/dL. Oni's was 339. A normal creatinine level for cats ranges from .8 to 2.4 mg/dL. Oni's was 27.2. He needed a miracle.

Oni continued to receive treatment and monitoring while in foster care with a member of our veterinary team. Follow-up bloodwork, drawn just eleven days after he arrived, revealed what our veterinarian described as an "amazing recovery!" His BUN level went from 339 to a healthy 29, and his creatinine level dropped from 27.2 down to a healthy 1.3. Oni survived. He made it through.

This incredible boy fought so hard for his life, and he deserves the best one ever. He likely has some mild permanent renal dysfunction from his ordeal, so his adopter is urged to continue feeding him a prescription urinary diet and monitor his urine output. In exchange, Oni will give you all of his love, head butts, and all the joy a cat can bring to your life. He knows how very precious each moment is, and he doesn't want to keep spending his in a kennel.

Come adopt this very special survivor today! Oni's adoption fee is just $20 through June 13th. Make Oni's kennel the first kennel you visit today, bring him home, and give him that beautiful life he fought so hard to see.

🐕: We don't know if Oni lived with dogs before. We recommend slow introductions.
👫: Oni would likely do well with children who are respectful to cats.
🐈: We don't know if Oni lived with cats before. We recommend slow introductions.
🩺: Oni is 2 years old and weighs just under 10 pounds. He's neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. He is currently on a prescription urinary diet and is recommended to continue on that post-adoption. Due to his medical history, he likely has mild permanent renal dysfunction.
📍: Oni is located in our Cat Adopt room at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown. He's ready to go home TODAY!
