Due to the layout of our Cat Adopt room, Oni's kennel may very well be the very last one you visit. In it, you'll see this handsome, 2-year-old, grey-and-white boy watching you and hoping you'll give him some attention. It's obvious he's friendly and sweet, but what no one would ever guess is how close Oni came to not being here.
We see a lot of cats arrive in what can easily be described as "rough shape," but that description doesn't accurately portray how dire Oni's condition was. He arrived in great pain and suffering from a urethra obstruction -- a life-threatening condition that causes severe electrolyte imbalances and organ damage. He was in urgent need of treatment.
Oni was barely conscious and had a heart rate of over 200 beats per minute. HSWC's veterinary team sprang into action, providing him pain medication, placing a catheter to relieve the obstruction, and removed 90-100mL of bloody urine from his bladder. Bloodwork revealed that he had severe hyperkalemia (high potassium) and a number of other concerning electrolyte imbalances. Our veterinary team worked hard to provide Oni fluids and medications, but his prognosis was poor. A normal BUN (blood urea nitrogen) level for cats is between 16 and 36 mg/dL. Oni's was 339. A normal creatinine level for cats ranges from .8 to 2.4 mg/dL. Oni's was 27.2. He needed a miracle.
Oni continued to receive treatment and monitoring while in foster care with a member of our veterinary team. Follow-up bloodwork, drawn just eleven days after he arrived, revealed what our veterinarian described as an "amazing recovery!" His BUN level went from 339 to a healthy 29, and his creatinine level dropped from 27.2 down to a healthy 1.3. Oni survived. He made it through.
This incredible boy fought so hard for his life, and he deserves the best one ever. He likely has some mild permanent renal dysfunction from his ordeal, so his adopter is urged to continue feeding him a prescription urinary diet and monitor his urine output. In exchange, Oni will give you all of his love, head butts, and all the joy a cat can bring to your life. He knows how very precious each moment is, and he doesn't want to keep spending his in a kennel.
Come adopt this very special survivor today! Oni's adoption fee is just $20 through June 13th. Make Oni's kennel the first kennel you visit today, bring him home, and give him that beautiful life he fought so hard to see.
