๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿฅš๐ŸฅšWe had such an amazing response when we asked for scrambled eggs! A huge THANK YOU to Joanne, Teresa, Bre, and Amy and Megan for the eggs! We filled our bowl in the fridge and bagged the rest to pull from the freezer as needed. The uncooked eggs will be hard boiled, and then bagged and frozen also. Eggs are a large part of healthy diets. ๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿฅš

โค๏ธWe have another crazy request. This will not cost a dime and can be a fun family activity! โค๏ธ

โ˜˜๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒฑ WE NEED WEEDS!!! โ˜˜๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒฑ

Our baby woodchucks are eating their body weight twice a day in weeds. Our neglected yard is full of weeds, but not what we need. Iโ€™m spending valuable time walking in circles for weeds that have all been picked.

We need (not treated or sprayed):
Dandelion greens
Plantain
Clover

Our dream is to have 7 families that will each pick a day of the week to be yours for the next 5-6 weeks.

Grab a grocery bag, fill it up with all you can find, mist them well with water, tie it up, and stick in your fridge until you can get here to drop off.

Please reach out if you can help! THANK YOU!

We are trying to keep up. We have taken in 27 baby animals in the last 2 months. There are not enough hours in the day after teaching for supply runs for more produce, cleaning cages, making bowls, making formula, and cooking eggs and veggies.

Is anyone willing to scramble 2 dozen eggs, with the shells crushed up in them, and drop them off tomorrow night (Tuesday, May 19th)?

We are grateful for the help!

We are here trying our best to save as many wild animals as possible, while I fight cancer, with 90% of the cost coming from my teaching salary. Thank you to our 3 beautiful monthly givers and the donations we have received this year to lower that from 100%. I pride myself on responding to every call whether we are able to help or direct the caller to other rehabbers. We are professional and take every opportunity to educate the public and groups about wildlife with only the cost to us. We share only the good stories of animals we release and not the reality of all the loss that rips a piece of heart off every time we lose one, even though most deaths were preventable if the animal had not been kept or fed by the finder.

BUT, we refuse to be disrespected for following the law! Or, by trying to continue our good work!

This morningโ€™s message was from someone who wanted help with a baby bunny in dire need of help. Turns out the bunny is from a domestic rabbit being bred to sell the offspring. I explained we are licensed for the care of wildlife and a pet needs the help of a veterinarian. The person shared that they could not afford the cost of a vet. We totally get that because we canโ€™t either. We can pay to feed our wild visitors or take them to the vet, but not both - limiting medical issues and injuries we can accept. I shared that we are operating on my teaching salary and cannot legally or financially take on pets. At that point the person got nasty and we blocked them. We will not dignify that with a response.

Pets require veterinary care. Itโ€™s unfortunate with the cost of living increasing daily. But we are not a free pet care service for rabbit breeders, or any other breeder that wants to pocket all the money at the expense of a life in need.

Great information about rabbits! We will get around 200 calls over the next 6 months about rabbit nests in yards. Know when to save a life by not doing a thing.

This litter of gorgeous kits did not need anyoneโ€™s assistance. Mama rabbit was doing a fantastic job taking care of them. Their fur is shiny and their little bodies are plump because mama rabbit visited them in the early morning and at dusk to feed them every day.

She stayed nearby, but out of sight, the rest of the time to deter predators from finding her babies with her scent. She waited until no humans were around to bolt to the nest and feed her kits for about five minutes before leaving again to forage and survive. With full tummies, her babies can wait up to 24 hours for their next meal. Her work was nearly done.

Her kits are about a week away from weaning and venturing out of the nest to live their own little bunny lives. But that was stolen away from them when they were stolen from mama rabbit. She came back for her evening feeding to find the nest empty and her kits nowhere to be found. It was like they just disappeared into thin air. She frantically darted around trying to figure out where they went. Suddenly, she was all alone.

A nest of baby bunnies in your yard that look healthy like these kidnapped kits are most likely not orphans.

If theyโ€™re in an inconvenient place because you want to landscape or do your spring garden cleaning, be patient and let mama rabbit finish the job that sheโ€™s worked so hard on. Let these little lives have the best chance. Be a good neighbor to our wildlings.

When rabbit kits come to rehab centers, their survival rate is depressingly low even with expert care, research, and proper supplies. When the public attempts to raise orphaned kits, the survival rate for one week may be less than 10%.

Sometimes, mama rabbit doesnโ€™t return and in those cases the best thing to do is to bring the baby bunnies to a licensed rehabber.

But how can you tell if the kits are still being cared for if mama is so careful about not being seen? Plump clean babies are probably still being visited by mama rabbit. Thin wrinkled babies are showing signs of dehydration and are most likely abandoned. If you are unsure, take a picture that you can send to the rehabber so they can help you evaluate.

You can also use the string test or twig test. Place two pieces of yarn or two twigs in an X shape over the nest. If markers have moved the next day, mama rabbit is still around. And sheโ€™s much better at raising her babies than any of us humans. Donโ€™t kidnap kits!

Another Sunday surprise! We send out a huge thank you to Amber, Steve, and little James for dropping off food and squirrel treats. Amber cooked a chicken and shredded it to enable us to pull from the freezer as needed; along with scrambled eggs and steamed veggies for our skunk too bougie to eat them raw. As our spring babies grow into juveniles and then prepare for release; we will go from 2 eggs a week to 2 dozen a week along with quadrupling our need for meat, produce, nuts, and grains.

We are grateful for the time and effort spent shopping and cooking to help save Ohioโ€™s wild critters!
