Stand your dog up on a hard floor. If a front toenail touches the ground, it is too long.

This is not about your floors getting scratched.

When the nail hits before the toe pad, the whole toe is pushed back, and your dog loses the foundational information he uses to know where 'down' is.

Then we wonder why an older dog is unsteady on his feet?

This morning I am going live with number two of the ten things I check before anyone calls a dog old: toenails.

How short they should be, how to get there, and what to do about a dog who hates having his feet touched.
