🕯️ Remembering the ones who walked beside us 🐾

The pets we've lost never really leave us. They're in the sound of a tail thumping on the floor, the warm spot on the couch, the way we still glance toward the door when we come home. 🧡

Día de los Mu***os de las Mascotas reminds us that remembering can be a celebration, not just a sorrow. By tradition, October 27 is the day our beloved animals return to visit, so this month we're taking time to honor them.

Our ofrenda at AARF Pet Central is open through October 27, and there's a place on it for your pet. Bring a photo, collar, or favorite toy, write down their name and a memory, and let them be celebrated. 🌼

🧮 Grocery Store Math, Revisited

If you've followed us on social media this year, you've seen us break out the calculator more than once. Back in June, we put Blue Buffalo at Ingles up against two of our shelf favorites: Zignature Salmon (12.5 lb) is $39.99 here, compared to $62.98 for a 13 lb bag of Blue Buffalo Grain-Free Salmon, and Fromm Rancherosa (12 lb) is $46.99 here versus $67.98 for a Blue Buffalo red meat formula. That's more than $20 back in your pocket on every bag. 😮 More recently, we compared Purina Small Bites Chicken & Rice, at $20.68 online and $16.99 at Kroger, with Skoki Small Bites, a multi-protein food made in Canada to EU standards, for just $13.99 a bag at AARF Pet Central. Over and over, the math comes out the same: the "convenient" choice usually costs more, and you often get less quality for the price.

And the savings don't stop at the register. Our Frequent Buyer Program means every bag brings you closer to a free one, something you won't find in the grocery aisle or your online cart. Better still, every purchase at AARF Pet Central supports our Cat Adoption Center, Community Pet Food Pantry, and Community Cat Program. When you shop with us, your pet eats better, you spend less, and your dollars help feed and care for pets right here in our community. So next time you're tempted to toss a bag in your grocery cart, remember: the best deal in town is at 951 Main St. 🐾💛

💊 The Truth About "Prescription" Pet Food

If you caught our recent myth-busting posts, you already know our take: "prescription" pet food doesn't mean medicine. That "Rx" on the bag is a manufacturer's marketing label, not a medical or regulatory standard, and there's no actual medicine inside the bag or can. It's still kibble and canned food. And the ingredients are often a step down, not up. Many therapeutic diets lean heavily on corn, wheat, soy, and by-products. For cats, who are obligate carnivores, that matters even more, and dry versions are often just as water-depleted as regular kibble. That's not ideal for the urinary and kidney issues these diets are so often recommended for. 😿🐶

Here's the good news for your pet and your wallet: if you're paying a premium for an Rx diet, you have other options. The prescription requirement is set by the manufacturer, not by law, and we carry lower-cost foods with real, high-quality ingredients that target the same needs. For cats, that includes IBD, kidney disease, urinary health, and mobility support. For dogs, it includes joint and mobility issues, kidney disease, digestive sensitivity, weight management, and skin and allergy concerns. Our team is happy to help you find the right fit, and we always recommend keeping your vet in the loop on diet changes for a diagnosed condition.

Did you know cats can actually sense the season changing before you do? 🍂 Shorter daylight hours trigger shifts in your cat's behavior, appetite, and sleep patterns. You might notice them eating a little more, sleeping longer, or seeking out warmer spots around the house as October sets in. It's completely normal and just their body responding to the change in light. 🐱
