Stockton Vet will be closed Saturday, September 5th through Monday, September 7th in observance of Labor Day. We will reopen on Tuesday, September 8th at 8am.

We all joke about “dog breath,” but persistent bad breath can actually be one of the first signs of dental disease.

What you can see when you lift your pet’s lip...tartar, redness or irritated gums may only be part of the story. Dental disease can also be hiding below the gumline, where you can’t see it.

Bacteria and plaque can lead to inflammation, infection, receding gums, bone loss, and painful or loose teeth. And because pets are very good at hiding discomfort, many continue eating normally even when their mouths hurt.

Watch for:
- Persistent bad breath
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
- Yellow or brown tartar buildup
- Dropping food or chewing differently
- Pawing at the mouth
- Excessive drooling
- Loose or broken teeth

If your pet’s breath can clear a room, don’t just blame the kibble! A dental exam can help us find out what’s really going on—including what may be hiding below the gumline.

As kids head back to school, will your pet(s) suddenly find themselves wondering where everybody went?

A big change in the household routine can be tough on our pets. Some may experience separation anxiety, while others simply become bored or restless with a suddenly quiet house.

You can help make the transition easier by keeping feeding and exercise schedules consistent, providing interactive toys or puzzles, and making sure your pet gets plenty of exercise and attention when the family is home. And if your pet seems to be having an especially difficult time adjusting to the new routine, give us a call. Sometimes those “back-to-school blues” need a little extra help.

This is a question we hear from pet owners, especially during the warmer months.

Some dogs simply don’t drink very often in front of their owners; they may take a few big drinks when you’re not watching, get additional moisture from wet food, or just naturally visit the water bowl less frequently than other dogs.

BUT a noticeable change in your dog’s drinking habits, either drinking much less OR much more than usual, is worth paying attention to. Rather than focusing on how often you actually see your dog drinking, keep an eye on whether the water level in the bowl is going down and whether their drinking habits have changed.

And remember: increased thirst can be just as important as decreased thirst. Excessive drinking can sometimes be associated with conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, hormonal disorders, or certain medications.

Is your pet extra itchy this summer? You’re not alone and it happens every year. We’ve been hearing from a lot of pet owners lately whose dogs and cats seem to be scratching, licking, or chewing more than usual. Summer can be especially tough on itchy pets. Common culprits include:

- Seasonal/environmental allergies: grasses, weeds, pollen & mold
- Yeast or bacterial skin infections
- Ear infections
- Hot spots and irritated skin
- Fleas or other parasites

A little occasional scratching is normal, but frequent scratching, licking, chewing, head shaking, hair loss, redness, odor, or irritated skin can mean something more is going on. The good news? Last month, 25% of patients tested for Anaplasmosis at Stockton Vet came back positive. It's treatable if caught early enough but we always stress that prevention is key!

Unlike Lyme disease which generally requires 24–48 hours of tick attachment for transmission, some tick-borne diseases such as Anaplasmosis may be transmitted much more quickly. Prompt tick removal and year-round tick prevention are so important.
