Have a new puppy or kitten at home? Now is the perfect time to get them comfortable with something that can make life much easier later: being handled!

While they're relaxed, regularly and gently practice:

Touching and holding their paws and toes
Looking inside their ears
Lifting their lips and touching around their mouth
Gently handling their belly, legs and tail
Briefly holding them still for a few seconds

Keep these little sessions short, positive and rewarding, a few treats can go a long way! Getting puppies and kittens accustomed to being touched in these ways can make future veterinary exams, nail trims, ear cleaning, tooth brushing and other at-home care much less stressful.

Ever wonder why we ask what brand of food your pet eats?
“Dry food,” “the chicken one,” or “the blue bag” doesn’t always give us quite the information we need. The exact brand and formula can tell us a bit about your pet’s nutrition including ingredients, calorie content, protein sources and whether the diet is appropriate for their age and health needs. And that information can be especially important when we’re evaluating things like weight changes, digestive issues, allergies, urinary problems, or certain medical conditions.

Can’t remember the name? Snap a quick photo of the front and back of the bag or can before your appointment. That works perfectly!

And don’t forget about treats, supplements and table scraps—they count, too!

Have you checked under their collar recently?
Your pet wears their collar every day but how often do you actually take it off and look underneath? Periodically removing your pet’s collar and taking a good look (and feel!) at the skin and fur underneath is a good idea because collars can hide quite a bit, especially on pets with thick or long coats. And because we don't normally see the skin underneath, small problems can sometimes go unnoticed.

What do we look for?
Redness or irritation
Matted or thinning fur
Lumps, bumps or sores
Ticks
Moisture or unusual odor
Areas that seem itchy or tender

Please don’t clean it before your appointment!
We know your instinct is to clean your pet up before bringing them to see us but sometimes we’d actually rather see the mess!

Ear discharge, eye discharge, crusty skin, irritated areas, unusual debris or drainage can all provide helpful clues about what may be going on. Cleaning the area right before your appointment can sometimes remove evidence that helps us determine the cause of the problem.

So if your pet has something unusual going on, don’t worry about making them presentable for us. Bring us the dirty ears, the goopy eyes and the crusty butts. We’ve seen it all.

Super duper TINY! This tiny little tick was found crawling on one of our patients and we almost missed it!

It’s a great reminder to keep your pets protected with year-round preventatives for ticks, fleas, heartworm, and other parasites. These little pests can be very hard to spot but they can still cause big problems.🔎👀
