SD Tank & SD Sky putting in the work on a long hot day. The weatherman said it was only supposed to be 75°, it was 86° by noon. We moved this set 5 miles and they were pretty worn out by about the 4th mile. Days like this is when I really appreciate a calm minded dog. Even when its hot they can stay focused and not overheat, because their adrenaline isn't constantly spiking. Calm minded dogs also keep the cattle from wearing out before we get to where we are going. A cow that is constantly fighting or worried about the dog behind her is more likely to keep looking back or trotting ahead which causes pairs to separate in the herd. When pairs separate, especially when the calves are tired, you get a mob of calves at the drag and some will undoubtedly try and go back to where we came from. The dogs keeping everything calm and paired up helps prevents this from happening.

Here is my entry for the Stockdogs Unleashed dog training competition. This is CNT Ellie. She is by SD Savage out of SD Rue.

They guys over at Stockdogs Unleashed wanted an unedited video from the kennel to the pen to show the dog raw before the first work. Here it is.

I'm a few days late to the party but I think I've got plenty to work with here.

We branded our first bunch this last weekend. We had a great crew and the weather was perfect.

We turned bulls in today and started moving groups to their summer range. It's a busy time, 14+ hour days, but it's worth it.

Moisture is low and hay is high, but days like this provides a welcomed distraction from it all.

We sure appreciate everyone's help. 📸:.momma 📸:

Whether they're moving 1 ft or 100 feet, your dog should stop when you say stop. No exceptions!

It's always amazed me how Michael can convince a group of his friends to show up on a Saturday, work in the heat for hours on end, and when they're all dirty, dehydrated, and exhausted, they all say "Man, that was fun. I can't wait to do it again"

Cowboys are built different!

This isn't an impressive video, but it illustrates a major quality i want in all of my dogs.

We are calving in full swing right now, and are moving these cows every week or two trying to keep them on green grass. The pastures are only about 500 acres, so not huge but big enough that I expect my dogs to be able to handle themselves without much instruction from me.

I require my dogs to apply pressure to cattle willingly, without hesitation whenever the cattle face and advance. I also require that they learn when to apply that pressure and when to wait and be patient. Often times, the cows will move from a dog that waits and applies pressure correctly.

Some dogs are naturals, some have to be taught. I haven't had a dog that wasnt naturally this way, that couldnt be taught to hold pressure and wait.

Now if one of these cows had advanced on the dog, I would have expected the dog to apply a hard deliberate bite and then release as soon as the cow turned away. I hate a heel biter that bites the cow as she's turned away. It completely defeats the lesson that you could have taught the cow.
