I traveled..
With my beloved mom in a van to several dog shows in several states, I know she invested time an effort into my dreams of learning the dog world and Im forever grateful for that and let's not forget my dad an his gift of bringing home my first pup of my very own that I learned to groom on, without their sacrifice of allowing my crazy love for animals, I wouldn't have had the same opportunities. There were many a hamster, a fish tank, rabbits, baby squirrels, cats, pups, foster pets, and baby wildlife id save when I could in the home for a number of years that they allowed me to nurture an grow with, A big thankyou to them!
After I went back into grooming from working at the pet hospital, I found a family that had a grooming shop an found myself working with them 5 days a week an when I'd get off work, I'd go home an work in my garage on any doggie clients that had called for haircuts an I'd work a few hours any evening I could. After some time, the calls would flow in from word of mouth or from animal hospitals of pets that needed care and it didnt take long before I was having to cut back on my days of working in someone else's shop and was slowly building my own. Mine started in a garage, we took the garage door off an closed it in an added a dog tub an cages. I liked my little space for just me an the furriends to hang out an listen to music an get pampered and as I did that more an more, I came to realize something of myself...I enjoyed the dogs, but I was building relationships with their owners an friendships too! I had so much in common with alot of my clients who loved dogs an cats too an the great conversations I have had through the years with so many wonderful people is tremendous an it all came from the common ground of the love of pets...I adore these people an appreciate them so much, I truly am grateful that I am able to work with them an their beloved babiesโ™ก

Life is the greatest teacher, experiences shape us an grow us an bring us from where we were to where we're going and to where we are...

I recommend mentors, just hanging out with someone who may know more than you is a growth plate moment for sure..thats exactly what I did when I learned not only about dog breeds an grooming tools, but about how to actually handle a living breathing creature while trying to use scissors on it with the goal of not producing bleeding and hopefully making the coat clean an neater than when I started...after some time at the shows, in the shop an at kennels, I had decided I wanted to try another avenue with animals to learn more..so I got a job as a vet technition at a Animal hospital and met some amazing people an learned how to handle sick animals, ones that were in pain, aggressive ones, elderly ones as they all needed IV catheters, xrays, bloodwork an surgical procedures an I gleaned learning in the medical field from amazing Veterinarians and other people in the same line of work..I did entertain the thought of being a vet an I would have been a good one with my compassionate heart, but I missed the grooming table, I missed creativity and the salon full of dogs an cats staring at me with curls, long hair, tangles an dirty paws and the vision I had in mind for their new look as they went home pampered an Styled..I liked that me and my creative side could take a picture in my head and make it come to life on a living canvas...so I knew in my heart I was a Pet Stylist an that I understood dogs an this is what birthed Pet Styles by Amy!
An aspect that I met of myself came from all my early mentors an the school of Life experiences, I stayed in the lane of animals an still enjoy learning today, but also realize that I want to pay it forwards an teach what I've learned...

Some Years back...
I've been into dogs/animals as long as I can remember, I think I had learned all the dog breeds by the young age of 12 and found myself chasing dog show dreams and in love with the Alaskan Malamute breed immensely! In part, probably because my family had one named Stardust as well as other dogs, cats an pigeons growing up.
I wanted to work with dogs and was too young at the time for a work permit, I was 12-13 and nobody would hire me until I found the lady who trained me. I was blessed to find her, she worked in her home an hired me as a dog bather. I loved learning an was a natural at working with the dogs and she apprenticed me an taught me to groom. It didnt happen over night, I put in many hours, weeks, months, years with her as a bather an then also groomed dogs with her. I went to dog grooming expos, dog shows, obedience trials an weight pull competitions...I saved my money to buy my tools an equipment and met many people in the dog grooming world and the dog show circuit..including the Alaskan Malamute breeders that I bought my own show dog from. I spent weekends learning from these breeders an went on the show circuits with them to local an national shows. I got to ride on their large buses with all the high quality Champion Bloodline dogs an help prepare them for the show ring an learned so much...I have great memories from these days.
I went for an obedience title with my own dog an went for his own Championship title as well. We did good for novice and intermediate levels at that time. One of my favorite things was to watch the weight pulling competitions at the national specialty show for Malamutes, they would pull semi trucks with ease, it was pretty amazing to watch such strength in such beautiful animals with that kind of working stamina. They still remain my favorite breed possibly because of where they originated โ™ก

~Behind The Comb, Scissors and pet hair~

There's me.
Most days I am covered in pet hair by animals that I truly adore an bond with an get to know very well.
The comb in this picture I have used to groom dogs with since 1990. I do have several other combs, but held onto this one because it was my first tool I bought with my own money. I cant tell you how many dogs I've groomed, Im smiling as I say that. I have lost count, but I do plan to tell some of my stories from this wonderful industry I found myself in at a young age. I found it by chance or maybe it found me...
You would think I came out of the womb holding Scissors as frequently as they are in my hands. They are a tool im fluent in now, but there was a time I was not...I remember my very first dog paw I learned to trim, I was nervous because I would never want to cut the wrong thing or hurt a pet. I worked slowly, pulling each hair up ever so tedious an making little cuts slowly. It really helped that I had a good teacher to apprentice me. She was the best, she took me in under her groomer wing an gave me my start...we all have to start somewhere. Dont ever be afraid to start something or give it a try, you may end up somewhere great an unexpected. I am so glad that I did. โ™ก
