Sitting at the table with my Tom Beanery Coffee and thinking about how I left SoDak for the weather but as I look out the window I’m wondering if I left or if I’m dreaming I left. Seems I’ve misplaced my snowboots so tennis shoes and walmart bags it is.
We’ve been preparing all week for the snow and so far I don’t think we missed anything. We’ve learned a lot about our place over the last 3 years and this year marks the 4th winter. Each year we’ve had tanks freeze or a hydrant pipe burst. Well we have no more hydrants and the tanks are equipped with tank heaters and mini space heaters under them. Waters are open and running smoothly! Stored water in the spare tanks in the barn because that hydrant always freezes. Threw a tank heater in one to keep it from freezing for the goats. The well house has a horse blanket over the door, heat lamp and space heater.
Horses are blanketed and outside since there’s no way it’s going to be raining. Stalls are prepped incase we get 30 mph winds, at that point they will go in. The cows seem to have found a spot out of the wind we do have and most have their nice snow blankets on! A few will be tucked in behind the barn tonight because they just aren’t staying as warm as I’d like. Our moronic goats have found their way into the barn and seem to be content in there, one heavy bred that I have a feeling will be kidding out in this. Good ole baby goats in my tack room if that happens. 🙄 Our chickens are locked inside the igloo with a heat lamp because they are too stupid to stay in there on their own. And ole Bu dog has weaseled her way into the house with Syd and Jo. Queso (the barn kitty) has her own cubby with a heat lamp.
Stay frosty out there my friends and welcome to my world of the frozen elements. And hello to another $800 electric bill 😂
