Please join us in welcoming our new veterinary intern, Dr. Alex Lytasz.

Dr. Alex Lytasz grew up just outside Toronto, Ontario, and began riding at the age of 8. Living close to Woodbine Racetrack, she attended her first horse race at the age of 10 and instantly fell in love. She began working in the thoroughbred industry at 15, and continued throughout school, while also branching and gaining experience across other equine disciplines. This deep immersion in the equine industry inspired her to pursue veterinary medicine, so she could continue working with these incredible equine athletes and supporting the dedicated horse people who care for them.
Dr. Lytasz earned her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science from the University of Guelph in 2018, during which she volunteered with the Future Vets Club foal watch team and participated in veterinary outreach trips. She went on to earn her DVM from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2026 and is thrilled to begin her career at Hess Equine.

Dr. Lytasz is passionate about all aspects of equine ambulatory medicine, with particular interests in sports medicine, emergency and critical care, foal work and internal medicine. She looks forward to building relationships within the local horse community, continuing her work within the racing industry, and growing her skills as a clinician.

She currently lives in Fallston, Maryland with her cat, Cali. In her spare time she enjoys scuba diving, traveling, outreach work, horseback riding, and staying active outdoors.

Exciting news- Hess Equine now offers acupuncture!

Dr. Pappalardo has spent the past 6 months diligently working towards becoming certified in veterinary acupunture through Chi University in Reddick, Florida. The acupuncture program at Chi University is based on Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM). TCVM focuses on the natural flow of energy (Qi) within the animal, with the goal of addressing any energy imbalances that ultimately lead to the problems/diseases we routinely see and treat in our patients. TCVM is an excellent complement to western medicine and can be applied to any concern or condition in our patients- from simple muscle soreness to complicated chronic disease processes, and everything in between.

If you would like to learn more about TCVM, acupuncture, or would like to schedule an acupuncture treatment with Dr. Pappalardo, please give the office a call at 717-993-5728.

Please join us in welcoming our new office assistant Kay Shanahan to the Hess Equine family.

Kay is originally from Maryland but she has been calling Pennsylvania home for the past eight years. She’s spent her life following her greatest passion—horses. Kay has been riding since she was five years old, and what started as a childhood love has shaped both her career and her life. As a former veterinary technician and riding instructor, she’s had the privilege of caring for horses and helping others build confidence in the saddle. Horses have always been at the heart of her identity.

Kay enjoys getting to know our clients, supporting our veterinary team, and helping make each visit a positive experience for both horses and the people who love them.

“I'm grateful to continue being part of the equine community. Whether I'm behind the front desk or at the barn, horses will always be at the heart of my life.” - Kay

Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Dr. Abby Reilly. She joined our practice this week and will be with us for the next year as a veterinary intern.

Dr. Abby Reilly is originally from Salisbury, Maryland, and has loved horses for as long as she can remember. She began riding at age 9 and developed a deep appreciation for the horse–human bond that ultimately inspired her to pursue veterinary medicine.

Dr. Reilly earned her Bachelor of Science in Equine Science from Centenary University in 2022, where she was an active member of Centenary’s Vet Team and spent much of her time working in the barns and caring for horses. She graduated from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2026 and is excited to begin her career at Hess Equine.

Dr. Reilly looks forward to building relationships with clients while providing compassionate, high-quality care and continuing to grow her knowledge across all aspects of equine medicine.

She currently lives in York, Pennsylvania, with her two cats, Minnow and Ducky. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, spending time outdoors, and being with friends and family. She also hopes to make her return to riding in the near future.

While cute at first glance, this donkey sitting like a dog is actually in response to hind foot pain. She is feeling better now after proper treatment. And she is an absolutely stellar patient.
