🐾🌎 September 28th is World Rabies Day 🌎🐾

Here in Montana, we share our communities with plenty of wildlife—and that means it’s important to remember that rabies isn’t just something we hear about elsewhere.

🦇🦊 Rabies can affect any mammal and is primarily spread through the bite or saliva of an infected animal. In Montana, wildlife such as bats, skunks, and other wild mammals can carry rabies, making wildlife encounters something to take seriously.

💉 Vaccination is the best protection. Keeping your dogs, cats, and other at-risk animals up to date on their rabies vaccines helps protect your pets, your family, and our Bitterroot Valley community.

🐶🐱 Remember:
• Keep pets current on their rabies vaccinations.
• Avoid approaching or handling wild animals, especially those acting strangely or appearing sick.
• Keep pets from interacting with wildlife whenever possible.
• If your pet has been bitten or exposed to a wild animal, contact us or your local animal control agency right away.
• There has been an influx in bat exposure in the valley, so even your primarily indoor pets can be at risk.

Rabies is almost always fatal once clinical signs appear, but it is preventable. A simple vaccine can make a lifesaving difference. ❤️

Stay safe, stay aware, and keep your family and pets protected! 🐾
