Dog training boils down to a couple of things: when to engage, how to engage, and when not to engage. There's a lot that goes into that question. It's quite loaded.

Today's session was with Dory and Bandit. Little bit of this and a little bit of that. Definitely two sides of the spectrum with these two. But most of all, we set the flags up in the front yard and I taught the family how to create the boundary...enough that the dogs don't go running past the boundary and chase dogs, deer or people.

Today's session was to help a dog find confidence enough to go outside and go potty when it's raining. They asked if it was ever raining, if I could call them and they would make time for me. Well, it was raining, I called, I went out, we put a bunch of reps in claiming space of the door when the dog would go outside and turn right around and scratch at the back door. Through enough repetitions, doing that exact thing, Tank finally went out and went potty. So now, it's up to them to continue with that. I'm in the camp that says, if I let you out in the backyard, you got to at least go out onto the lawn. Generally, if they make it to the lawn, they will do their business and return. I do believe we got it all figured out :-)

I hate that dropping sensation when you think you lost your phone. Jackson and I went and ate some Chinese food, I came back and took a nap, the kids all went their separate ways and are gone for the night, so I had no one be able to help me. I got up all in a panic, tore up the couch and all the house freaking out LOL. I drove up to the restaurant, she said she didn't see it. Drove home, saw my neighbor outside, asked him to call my phone, he did, I found it, in my belly bag that I use when I go on pack walk...🤪

Today's pack walk. Thank you all for coming :-) a few of the dogs struggled a little bit today, but that's why I do this...

One of the biggest misconceptions in dog training is that a dog can be "fully trained" in 30 days.

That’s not how living creatures work.

Can a dog make huge progress in a month? Absolutely. You can build foundations, improve communication, introduce structure, and completely change the direction the dog is heading.

But then real life happens.

The guests come over.
The schedule changes.
The kids get busy.
The walks get shorter.
The rules become inconsistent.
The dog gets comfortable.
The excitement comes back.

And suddenly people think the training ā€œstopped working.ā€

It didn’t.

Training was never supposed to be a one-time event in the first place.

A dog can know ā€œPlaceā€ perfectly in a quiet house, then struggle when the environment changes if nobody maintains the expectation. A reactive dog can make incredible progress, but still need guidance when life gets overwhelming. A dog can walk beautifully for weeks, then slowly start pulling again when consistency disappears.

Because training isn’t just teaching commands.

It’s shaping habits, emotional responses, impulse control, coping skills, and daily patterns over time.

That’s why I always say: You don’t finish training. You maintain it.

The reality is that training doesn't end. It evolves. Early on, training feels like work. Later, it feels like routine. Eventually, it becomes part of how you and your dog live together.

But the idea that dogs should be permanently ā€œdoneā€ after a few weeks sets owners up for frustration and unrealistic expectations from the very beginning. šŸ¶ā¤ļø
