Sometimes X-Ray and Ultrasound imaging can only tell us so much, and we have to turn to the surgery suite! Using previous imaging as our guide, we use our Arthroscope to take a peek inside of the area in question.

This technique gives us the perfect opportunity to get real time visualization of the different compartments of the stifle, soft tissue, bone and cartilage structures. We can also observe and perform any treatments or therapies that the horse may need while under general anesthesia!

Proper cast placement is key for safe stabilization and optimal healing in equine fractures and soft tissue injuries (we sometimes use casts to protect severe foot lacerations).

The limb is first positioned in correct alignment, with the foot held in a neutral โ€œballet dancerโ€ position. The limb is fully supported by assistants while padding, and protective layers are applied.

Fiberglass casting material is then carefully wrapped with controlled overlap, starting proximally and moving distally, ensuring smooth, even tension without pressure points. The foot is incorporated in a second layer for full support, and additional reinforcement is added over high-stress areas when needed!

Another cool surgery hit the Or last week from our in house CT Imaging team! This young horse came in for a CT for ongoing lameness, and Dr. Felipe found a ruptured manica flexora! Another surgery you don't see every day, but it is definitley a cool one!

Say that three times fast! Dr. Felipe and the SEH Team got to work early yesterday morning on this surgery! This horse was seen at a different clinic where X-Rays were taken and upon finding the fracture, they put a beautiful cast on his leg for support on his journey to us.

We are lucky enough to have the CT Machine here at the clinc to use in conjuntion with X-Ray Imaging to help us get this horse on the road to recovery! While the surgery itself may be a long one, it was succesful and we are excited to get this horse on the road to recovery!

Sequestrums are pieces of dead bone that can pop up after an injury or infection, and they like to stick around. These pieces often precent wounds from healing, and usually require surgical removal!

Last week Dr. Felipe removed this sequestrum from a young horse in record time! Using X-Ray imaging before, during and after makes these surguries incredibily fast and easy on the horse and our team!
