🍂 Fall weather, changing conditions, and wet pastures can bring their own set of hoof problems, including pesky abscesses, sudden lameness, and dreaded time off! 😥

Signs of a possible hoof abscess:
🐴 Sudden or severe lameness
🔥 Heat in the affected hoof
❤️‍🔥 A strong or bounding digital pulse
🦶 Sensitivity to hoof pressure
🩹 Drainage or discharge

Did you know PEMF may be used as a supportive therapy during hoof abscess recovery? 🧲

PEMF is intended to support circulation and the body’s natural healing processes. While it hasn’t been proven to draw an abscess to the surface or speed up its drainage, it may be considered as a complementary modality during recovery, alongside appropriate veterinary and farrier care. ❤️‍🩹

Once an abscess has drained, supporting the horse’s recovery is just as important! Addressing compensatory tension from altered movement can also be beneficial as your horse returns to their normal comfort and routine. 🐎

Have you ever incorporated PEMF into your horse’s hoof abscess recovery? Share your experience below! 👇

Your horse can’t tell you exactly where it hurts…
But they can give you clues. 👀🐴

Horses are incredibly good at communicating through changes in their behavior, posture, movement, and performance.
Sometimes those changes are subtle enough that they’re easy to overlook.

Maybe your horse suddenly…

🐴 Doesn’t want to stand square.
🐴 Feels uncomfortable when you ask them to bend one direction.
🐴 Starts resisting the saddle or becomes girthy.
🐴 Doesn’t want to pick up a particular lead.
🐴 Starts swapping leads, rushing, or becoming resistant during transitions.
🐴 Feels different under saddle than they normally do.
🐴 Seems unusually sensitive when being groomed or touched.
🐴 Just doesn’t feel like themselves.

Does that automatically mean your horse is hurting?
No.

There can be many reasons for changes in behavior or performance — training, environment, tack, footing, farrier changes, workload, and other factors can all play a role.
But a CHANGE from your horse’s normal is worth paying attention to. 🔎

That’s why knowing your horse’s baseline is so important.
🖤You know how they normally stand.
🖤You know how they normally move.
🖤You know how they normally react to the saddle.
🖤You know what their “normal” attitude looks like.

And when something changes, you’re in the best position to notice it.

Bodywork can be one piece of the puzzle when evaluating how your horse is feeling, but it isn’t a substitute for veterinary care. If your horse develops new, persistent, or unexplained changes in movement, behavior, or performance, it’s important to involve your veterinarian to help determine what’s going on.

Your horse may not be able to point to the exact spot and say, “This is where it hurts.”
But they’re communicating.
We just have to learn how to listen. ❤️

What’s one subtle change your horse has made that immediately told you something was different?

Drop it in the comments — you might help another horse owner recognize a clue they’ve been seeing, too.🔎

“Why does my horse need bodywork if they feel great?”
This is actually one of my favorite questions.

Because the goal of regular bodywork isn’t to wait until your horse is obviously sore, uncomfortable, or struggling.
It’s to help maintain the way they’re feeling when they’re already doing well.

Think of it like maintenance.

Your horse works, trains, competes, carries a rider, changes direction, jumps, spins, stops, collects, extends, or simply spends hours standing around.
All of those things place different demands on the body.

Regular bodywork can be part of a bigger management program designed to help your horse stay comfortable and performing at their best.

During maintenance sessions, I’m not just looking for “what hurts.”

I’m paying attention to changes in:

🐴 Posture and stance
🐴 Muscle tone and tension
🐴 Range of motion
🐴 Soft-tissue restrictions
🐴 Fascial mobility
🐴 Movement patterns
🐴 How your horse responds compared to previous sessions

And sometimes the biggest win is simply…

✨ Nothing is wrong. ✨

Your horse feels good.
They’re moving well.
They’re doing their job.
They’re happy and comfortable.
THAT is something worth maintaining.

Of course, bodywork isn’t a replacement for veterinary, farrier, dental, saddle-fitting, or other necessary care. And if your horse develops a new or unexplained problem, that should always be addressed appropriately.

But when your horse is feeling good?
That can be the perfect time to keep them feeling good. ❤️

Don’t wait for your horse to tell you they’re uncomfortable before thinking about maintenance.

Keep them feeling their best BEFORE there’s a problem to chase.

Why don’t I use the exact same bodywork routine on every horse? 🤔🐴

Because no two horses are the same.
Even if two horses are in the same discipline, have the same workload, or even live in the same barn, their bodies can present completely differently.

One horse may have tension through the neck and poll.

Another may have restrictions through the shoulder and thoracic sling.

And sometimes, the areas that LOOK like they need the most attention aren’t necessarily where the root of the restriction is coming from. 🕸️

That’s why I don’t believe in a “cookie-cutter” bodywork session.

Before I get started, I look at the horse as a whole and take into consideration:

🐴 Their posture and stance
🐴 How they move
🐴 Their discipline and workload
🐴 Previous injuries or areas of concern
🐴 Recent farrier, veterinary, or saddle changes
🐴 What their owner or trainer has noticed at home or under saddle
🐴 How their body is responding during the session

From there, I can adjust my approach and choose the modalities that are appropriate for THAT horse on THAT day.

Because your horse’s needs can change from one session to the next.

A horse coming off a hard competition weekend may need something completely different than the same horse during a lighter training week.

A horse returning to work may need a different approach than a horse who has been consistently competing.

And sometimes the best thing I can do is recognize that something falls outside the scope of bodywork and recommend involving your veterinarian, farrier, saddle fitter, or other appropriate professional.

My goal isn’t to make every horse fit into the same routine. My goal is to meet each horse where they are and work with what THEIR body is telling me. ❤️

That’s what individualized bodywork is all about.
