Whippoorwill West Rabbitry & Caviary

Whippoorwill West Rabbitry & Caviary I've moved to Maine. Our new page is Whippoorwill Farm and Nursery, located in Steep Falls, Maine. I still have the same phone number.

I have raised Cavies (guinea pigs) for over 35 years, and rabbits off and on for the past 25 years. Last year (2012) we became interested in showing rabbits and purchased several breeding trios. I also expanded my interest in Cavies. Prices vary greatly according to the quality of the specific animal: pet quality, brood quality (pedigreed), or show quality (pedigreed). Rabbit varieties raised are

Mini-Rex, Netherland Dwarf, and American Blues and Whites. Mini-Rex: Broken, and Tri. Also have started a brand new color I am calling speckled. NDs: Chocolate, Sable Point, Siamese Sable, Himalayan, Chocolate Otter, and Black Otter. Trying to get my Sable Marten line going, and starting Blue Eyed Whites very soon. Cavy varities raised are American, Abyssinian (and Satin American and Abyssinian), Teddy, and I began developing my own line of Cavies in 2008, crossing a Peruvian boar with an Abyssinian doe. I've always called the cross Abyruvians. From that boar and doe, I have bred many generations of pups. Abyssinian: Roan (Black and Chocolate), Black, and Lilac. Teddy: Mostly mixed Brown and Red. Just had a Black, Red & White born. Abyruvian: Most of my Abyruvians are similar to Abys, but have 4 colors in their coats: Black, Red, White, and Brown. I have a few that would be called Tortoiseshell and White since they are 3 colors. I am establishing a breeding program to get the longer haired variety of this breed going, as long-haired pups are currently born at a rate of about 1:100. Rabbit prices range from $40 - $100 depending on the quality (Pet, brood, or show), variety, and breed. Cavy prices range from $10 - $25 each. I make deals for multiple purchases as well as for 4-Hers and FFAers.

Neither Whippoorwill West Rabbitry (closed) nor Whippoorwill Farm have a separate website other than our pages on Facebook.

The rabbits/guinea pigs have been moved to Maine, except for a few that were on litters or that were forgotten. That will change this weekend when the final 11 rabbits and their kits, and the last 12-15 guinea pigs head out on Saturday. I will be loading them up along with our other belongings and making my 4th cross-country drive of the month starting Saturday some time! I will be closing this page and will begin using Whippoorwill Farm towards the end of July after we get back from Europe.

Three new litters in the past 2 days :)

Wednesday, Dwarf Villa's Holly (Sable Point ND) x WW's Weylyn (Sable Point ND) kindled 3 kits at about 11pm. I brought them in the house around 1ish as they were not as warm as I wished. I took them back out to her this morning and she immediately jumped in to the box and fed them, then pulled some more fur to cover the kits better. They are doing great tonight.

Today, at around 11am, WW's Daenerys (Blue/Fawn Harlequin MR) x WW's Arawn (Black/Blue Speckled MR) delivered 5 kits. All of them are marked, and all look as if they will be speckled.

And finally, WW's Dolly (Chocolate ND) x Whippoorwill West's Gilligan (Black ND) kindled her first litter of 2 kits. One (a blue) did not make it. The 2nd is doing well, with 2 of Dany's kits fostered to Dolly to help keep her kit (undetermined color at the moment) warm.

All babies are doing well, and all have nice fat bellies and very attentive mothers :)

Right now, no more babies are scheduled until mid February.

Again, if you bought rabbits from me at the last 2 or 3 shows, and are waiting for a pedigree, I need your information. I lost my notebook with names, addresses (e-mail and snail mail), phone numbers, and rabbit info. Please send me either an e-mail, or you can PM here. Thank you!

IMPORTANT:

To all of you who bought bunnies from me at previous shows, I've lost my notebook with addresses, etc., in it and I need you to contact me here in order to get you your pedigrees. Please PM me with your name and address, e-mail, and what you bought from me and which show it was.

I apologize for the delays and inconvenience this is causing anyone. Thank you for your help in resolving this!

Beach Bunny's Confetti (B&O Tri Mini-Rex) x Whippoorwill West's Arawn; delivered her 4th litter with speckleds at 9pm tonight as I was finishing up feeding the rabbits. This was the first line breeding with her back to her progeny. Arawn is the first speckled buck that we got, from C&T's Danger and Confetti's 2nd litter back in August. She delivered 6 kits this time, with one heavily marked kits and a couple that would be considered charlies.

Had a surprise litter last night, luckily I noticed that the doe was furiously digging in the corner of her cage and thought she wanted to be bred. I palpated her on schedule back in December and was not able to feel anything. Because I had a slew of does already positive, I decided to give her a break. Well, with all the digging I figured she was really hormonal so was going to breed her. I pulled her out to check her vent and found her very purple. Before I put a doe in with a buck I palpate to make sure she is empty. Good thing, she had several very large kits in her belly! I put her back in her cage and gave her a nest box (@ 9:15). I checked on her at 12:30 and she had stuffed all of her hay in to the box and also pulled a lot of fur. She was still gathering so I gave her more hay and figured I'd have to trust her and check again in the morning. Well, I found myself still awake at 2:15am so checked her again and she had 5 good size kits tucked into her nest, 1 Sable Marten and 4 pinkies (prob Himi Martens).

Whippoorwill West's Zelia (Himi Marten) x SKR's Hugo (Sable Marten).

01/14/2014

The final litter of this round. WW's Shasta (Sable Marten ND) x SKR's Hugo (Sable Marten) delivered her first litter of 4 kits tonight at 9:15. Really glad I was keeping an eye on her because she built her nest in the corner beside her nestbox and the kits were already starting to scatter after just 5 minutes. All are safe and snug in the nestbox and all are looking very healthy :)

The 4th litter is a no go. She was pregnant last week (could feel the babies) but there is nothing in there now except one small little clump of something about the size of a very large grape. That would have been from our Black Otter so am a little disappointed.

Oh well. Getting ready for this weekends show in Santa Rosa. We (Braedon and I) will be showing 3 American Blues and 17 Netherland Dwarfs, some of which will be available if anyone is interested in buying :)

C&T's Roca (Broken Blue MR) x PB's Mordechai (B&O Tri). Litter born 12-13-13.
