WHAT THOSE EARLY HORSES REALLY LOOKED LIKE. A friend of mine sent me this photo from the Grant-Kohrs Ranch collection thinking I would appreciate the horses. I do. This is what horses in the West generally looked like from the late 1800s up to about 1950. In movies and television, you seldom see accurate depictions of the western horse of that era because they use today's horses. Note that these are leggy, slab-sided, thin-necked and a little common-headed. Thoroughbred and Morgan, with a dash of Mustang, Indian Pony, and maybe a little coach breeding, was the common blood in the southwest. Up north, a little draft blood might enter in. And they are solid-colored. These horses would fit basic Army Remount standards and be pretty similar to early cowboy polo horses. The Oswald Quarter Horses I write about so often fit this pattern except they are heavier muscled.
