With the Defender Kentucky CCI5* week upon us, Chronicle contributor Kyle Carter looks at why Kentucky continues to thrive, even as this year's loss of Maryland’s five-star underscores the challenges facing the sport.

“But it’s important to remember, at any point we could lose the crown jewel of our sport,” Carter writes. “We’re always at risk, if we try to improve something, that we might damage it and lose its uniqueness. We’ve seen this happen at many events throughout the country. If we wish to continue to grow, we must continue to bring in more participants to this sport.”
