👂 Did you see the recent news about New World Screwworm in the Southwest? We’ve had a few clients ask about it, so we wanted to share the facts and help keep our community informed.

👏🏻 First, the good news: There are currently ZERO cases of New World Screwworm in North Carolina, and the risk to local pets remains very low.

❗️However, cases have been confirmed in Texas and New Mexico. As summer travel season gets underway, it’s a good reminder to check your pets regularly for cuts, scrapes, bug bites, or other wounds—especially if you’re traveling.

🛡️ Keeping your pet on a veterinarian-approved parasite preventive and addressing wounds promptly are some of the best ways to help protect their health.

🐴 Livestock owners: While we are not seeing screwworm in North Carolina, animals with untreated wounds can be at higher risk for a variety of infections. Be sure to monitor and treat wounds promptly.

☀️ Summer temperatures are heating up, and pavement can become much hotter than the air around it.

Before heading out for a walk, try the 7-second test:

✋ Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds.

If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws.

To help keep your pet comfortable:
🐾 Walk during the early morning or evening
💧 Bring water along
🌳 Stick to shaded areas when possible

While Dr. McKenna Thompson is busy caring for patients, Timber can usually be found relaxing in her office, keeping an eye on things from behind the scenes.

Although he prefers the comfort of his favorite spot, Timber occasionally makes an appearance around the clinic and is always happy to soak up a little extra attention when he does. 🐶

His sweet personality has made him a favorite among our team, and we’re pretty sure he’d win “Employee of the Month” every single time. 😉
