Spaying and neutering does so much more than prevent unwanted litters—it helps pets live healthier, happier lives while making a positive impact on our community. ❤️

✔️ Reduces the risk of certain cancers & other health issues
✔️ Helps decrease roaming, marking, & other unwanted behaviors
✔️ Reduces pet overpopulation
✔️ Creates a healthier, safer future for pets & people alike

Every pet that is spayed or neutered is one step toward fewer homeless animals & that's something we should all strive for.

Talk to your veterinarian about the best time to spay or neuter your pet or visit the OCHS Spay and Neuter Clinic clinic to explore low-cost options. Together, we can make a difference, one pet at a time. 🐶🐱

Meet Capri & Maverick! 🐾💕

This adorable little duo is ready to find their forever homes! Sweet, snuggly, playful, and full of kitten charm, either one would make the perfect addition to your family. 🏡

Capri and Maverick were roaming solo before being found by Good Samaritans and brought to the shelter, where they've received lots of love and care while waiting for their second chance.

🐈‍⬛ Capri is a 3-month-old female black domestic shorthair weighing in at a mighty 2 pounds of pure cuteness.

🐈 Maverick is a 2-month-old male orange domestic longhair who already tips the scales at nearly 3 pounds!

These tiny kittens are ready to trade shelter life for cozy beds, sunny windowsills, and families to call their own. Come meet them today - the shelter opens at 11! ❤️

A few weeks ago, Libby from Salem, Massachusetts reached out to us hoping to learn more about her rescue pup, Jules. She didn’t have much information to go on — only that Jules (formerly Jewel) had once been at OCHS. Luckily for everyone involved, we recognized her immediately! 🩷

Jules came to OCHS in July 2025 and, after spending a few weeks with us, was selected for transport and made the long journey to Massachusetts in search of her forever home. And what a life she’s living now!

According to Libby, Jules’ favorite hobby is people watching — she’s incredibly curious about the world around her! She also loves smelling flowers, going for runs and car rides, snuggling, tormenting her feline sisters, sleeping, giving kisses, and even holding hands. 🐾

Libby says Jules has come such a long way with her training and has become a bit of a local celebrity thanks to her adorable floppy ear. We couldn’t be happier to see this sweet girl thriving and living the life she deserves.

Stories like Jules’ remind us just how important our transport partners are in helping shelter pets find loving homes far beyond Mississippi. Happy tails to Jules and Libby! ✨

Have an OCHS alum of your own? We’d love to feature more happy endings — send us a message and share your happy tails with us! 🐶💕

We are still looking for a foster for this mama and her babies! Please consider helping this little family out. ❤

‼️HELP! FOSTER NEEDED! ‼️

We’ve had a mama and her nursing babies brought in and they do not need to stay at the shelter. Can anyone foster?? Kittens are about 4 weeks old and will need a 2-4 week foster commitment. They are healthy!

If you can, please make sure you have a foster application on file (linked in the comments) and then call the shelter: 662-338-9093.

Early morning shoutout to Starkville Animal Control Officer Mercedes Reed, Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Office , Ackerman Police Department, and our very own shelter manager, Sarah Hankins! 🐾

After working well past closing time, Sarah was finally headed home when she spotted blue lights flashing along the roadway. When she noticed the Animal Control Officer stepping out of her vehicle, she immediately pulled over to help.

Two terrified little puppies — scared and a bit feral — had darted across a very busy road and down a steep embankment. Without hesitation, Sarah and Mercedes jumped into action and managed to safely snag both pups before they could get hurt.

Thanks to their quick thinking, teamwork, and dedication, these two precious babies are now safe at the shelter with full bellies and a warm place to rest. 💛 We are so grateful for the people in our community who go above and beyond for animals in need — no matter the hour.

While these two are not currently available for adoption or foster, please consider fostering or adopting one of our many (MANY) available pups. We are very full and could use a little breathing room!
