From the MS Board of Animal Health

A horse in Clarke County has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). This is the first EEE case in Mississippi this year. EEE is transmitted to horses and humans from mosquitoes. The disease cannot be transmitted to humans from horses.

The MBAH stresses to all horse owners the importance of vaccinations. EEE is nearly 100% fatal in horses and no treatment is available. VACCINATION IS THE ONLY PREVENTION AVAILABLE AGAINST EEE IN HORSES. Talk to your veterinarian about this disease and vaccinations.

More information can be found on the following websites:
https://aaep.org/resource/eastern-equine-encephalitis-eee/

https://equinediseasecc.org/vaccination

https://www.cdc.gov/eastern-equine-encephalitis/about/index.html

Briefly understand the cause, symptoms, and ways to prevent it.
