Here’s another clip from my demonstration at the Canine Carnival!

In this clip I discus the importance of reward placement, using rewards to shape behavior, and building value around distractions!

Here is a snippet from my obedience demonstration at the Canine Carnival at the this past weekend.

Dogs learn through our patterns, and you can only figure out patterns through repetition!

Huge thank you to the Wildlife Science Center for hosting the Canine Carnival Event at the Wildlife Science Centerl today! I had an amazing time spending the day talking all things dogs, connecting with so many great people, and even getting to enjoy some adorable wolf pups. I also had the opportunity to demo obedience and agility, which was such a fun part of the event! Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat and watch the demos — I loved meeting you all!

I have two dogs… and I still say this šŸ‘‡

Your dog doesn’t need a friend.

Getting a second dog won’t fix:
• Separation anxiety
• Reactivity
• Boredom
• Lack of training

In a lot of cases—it actually makes things worse.

I didn’t get another dog for my dog.
I got another dog because I wanted one.

My dogs coexist. They’re not obsessed with each other, and honestly my older dog finds my puppy annoying more than anything else. If you look closely in this video you can see that.

That’s the goal.

A well-trained, neutral dog > a dog that ā€œneedsā€ other dogs.

If you want a second dog, go for it.
Just make sure it’s for the right reasons.

Why do we expect our dogs to work for free? There’s give and take in every relationship. I do things for you, you do things for me. Why don’t we apply that to our dogs?

When we build strong relationships with people we can rely on them. The same goes for our dogs.

In this video I reward Forrest with toys. But at the end of our session I can set the toy down and we can enjoy each other. It doesn’t have to be toy focused. Why? Because I have spent eight months building a relationship with him.

Showing him I’m on his team. I will do things for him. I’m on his side.

And because I did that, we have a relationship, he trusts me and I trust him, he will do things for me because I do things for him. I reward him with treats and toys a lot because he DESERVES it. I also know he will listen without.

If moving away from treats and toys as a reward is a goal for you, it has to be worth it. Having a truly solid relationship is the basis for that.

One of the biggest mistakes I see with e-collars šŸ‘‡

You can’t just slap one on and expect it to work.

An e-collar isn’t a magic fix—it’s a communication tool. And without proper conditioning, all you’re doing is confusing your dog.

That’s when you start to see:
āŒ Anxiety
āŒ Avoidance
āŒ Fear

The problem isn’t the tool—it’s how it’s introduced.

Done right, your dog understands exactly what the sensation means.
Done wrong, they’re left guessing.

Clarity builds confidence. Confusion creates problems.
