Since opening their doors in 2016, Richard and Rebecca Lykins, owners of Grateful Pets, have been dedicated to creating a place where pets feel just as comfortable as they do at home. With backgrounds in the restaurant and hospitality industry, the couple recognized a need for a grooming and pet care facility that felt welcoming not only for dogs but for their owners as well. When Rebecca’s previous grooming workplace relocated from the Soulard area, they saw it as the perfect opportunity to take a leap of faith and start their own business.
What began as a dream quickly became a reality filled with challenges and growth. From navigating the early stages of launching a business to adapting during the global pandemic, Richard and Rebecca focused on learning, adjusting, and staying committed to their mission. Their dedication paid off, and today Grateful Pets has grown into a trusted destination for grooming, daycare, and training for local pet owners.
As active members of the Affton-Lemay Chamber of Commerce, the Lykins value the opportunity to connect with fellow business owners and community members. Word-of-mouth has been their most powerful form of advertising, and the Chamber has helped them expand their network and increase brand awareness within the local community.
At Grateful Pets, safety and comfort are always the top priority. Their 2,000-square-foot climate-controlled play space allows dogs of all sizes to socialize and play while being carefully supervised by trained staff. Team members are trained to monitor dog interactions closely, maintain a clean environment, and ensure every pet—from energetic puppies to larger breeds—has a safe and positive experience.
Beyond grooming and daycare, the team also believes in educating the community. By offering Pet First Aid and CPR classes, they empower pet owners with the knowledge and confidence to respond in case of an emergency—because, as they say, pets truly are part of the family.
Looking ahead, the future is bright for Grateful Pets. Richard and Rebecca are currently planning to build what they hope will become the premier luxury pet hotel in the St. Louis area, offering all-inclusive boarding and a safe, comfortable, and luxurious stay for pets while their owners are away.
With passion, resilience, and a deep love for animals, Grateful Pets continues to grow while staying true to its mission: providing exceptional care for every member of their furry family.
