Good morning Friends! 🐾

We’re starting the day the way we always do — cleaning, feeding, giving medications, freshening up beds and, of course, being greeted by lots of very happy cats who are ready for breakfast, attention and a brand-new day.

There’s a lot to do every morning when you’re caring for a shelter full of cats, but these faces make it a pretty wonderful way to start the day.

Happy Thursday from all of us at The Cat Shelter! 🐱

Meet Hot Dog ❤

He is about 6 years old and honestly one of the sweetest cats we have ever had here at the shelter. The minute you start petting him, he starts making biscuits and rolling around, and he would be perfectly happy if you never stopped.

Hot Dog was trapped as part of a feral cat colony for TNR. But our friends at Carol House Quick Fix Pet Clinic quickly realized two things: he was definitely not feral, and he was not feeling well. They fell in love with him and called to ask if we could bring him into rescue.

Of course we said yes.

Since then, Hot Dog has been to the vet multiple times, but we still do not know exactly what is making him feel so lousy. He is lethargic, does not move around very much, and you can just look at him and tell he does not feel good.

We are spoiling him with attention, good food and all the love he wants, but that is not enough. Hot Dog will be seeing a specialist soon so we can hopefully figure out what is going on. In the meantime, we are doing everything we can to keep him comfortable. And right now, that is harder than it should be.

It is around 100 degrees outside, and our aging HVAC system simply cannot keep up. The shelter has been hovering around 80 degrees and warmer during the day, with plenty of humidity mixed in.

Hot Dog is one of 85 cats currently in our care, including 17 with special medical needs such as asthma, upper respiratory illness and other conditions that make this heat even harder on them.

We are trying to raise $7,500 for HVAC repairs and upgrades so Hot Dog and all the cats here can be more comfortable while we get through this heat.

Will you please help us keep Hot Dog cool?

**One more very practical need**
We are down to just one bottle of bleach and one bottle of laundry detergent, and with 85 cats, that will not do for long. We can use unscented bleach and unscented laundry detergent of any kind.

We need water — again. 💧

The City of St. Louis has issued a boil water order that affects The Cat Shelter, and with about 90 cats in our care right now, we go through a LOT of water.

This is the second time this summer we’ve found ourselves in this situation. The last time it happened, you all bailed us out — and we’re hoping you can help us again.

If you’re able, please bring bottled water or gallon jugs of water to:
The Cat Shelter
2151 59th Street
St. Louis, MO 63110

Every case and every gallon helps us keep water bowls full, prepare food, give medications and care for 90 cats while the boil order is in effect.

Thank you for always showing up for our cats when we need you. ❤️

Keeping 90-ish cats healthy takes a lot of love, a lot of work—and a surprising amount of bleach, laundry detergent and paper towels!

We’re running low on some of these very unglamorous supplies that quietly do a lot of heavy lifting around here: unscented bleach, laundry detergent, fabric softener/dryer sheets, paper towels and toilet paper. They may not be exciting, but they are part of nearly everything we do to keep the shelter clean, sanitary and comfortable for the cats in our care.

If you’re out shopping and can add an extra bottle, box or roll to your cart, we would be incredibly grateful. You can also order from our Amazon Wishlist and have supplies sent directly to us: https://a.co/01jZqYpM

Donations can be dropped off at The Cat Shelter, 2151 59th Street, St. Louis, MO 63110.

It’s not the glamorous side of animal rescue—but clean laundry, clean spaces and endless paper towels are a pretty big part of keeping cats healthy. Thank you for helping us keep our shelves stocked. ❤️

Hello Friends - We are so happy to finally be celebrating the adoption of Sardine!

Sardine came to us early this year with his siblings, Shrimp and Anchovy, and their mom, Pearl, after being tied inside a black trash bag that someone was throwing into a dumpster. Thankfully, they were found in time and made their way to us.

Shrimp and Anchovy were adopted together into a wonderful home, while Sardine and his mom were adopted into another. It ended up being exactly right because the two pairs had very different energy, and each found a home that suited them perfectly while still getting to stay with family.

But just before Sardine was supposed to go home, he became sick and was diagnosed with FIP. His adopters could have changed their minds, but instead they told us they would wait for him. So Sardine stayed with us through 100 days of treatment while his family waited for the day he would finally be ready to come home. Then on Monday we got the news we had all been hoping for: his bloodwork came back completely normal.

And now, finally, Sardine is home. We are going to miss this little guy very much, and our staff made sure he got plenty of hugs before he left and wished him well on this next part of his life. But we are even happier knowing where he is going - to a family who loved him enough to wait for him and who, we are quite confident, will never throw him away.

Au revoir, Sardine. We are so glad you reached us in time to have the life you deserved all along. And if you ever need us, we will be here. ❤

Every day, our cats remind us that every life has value. That's a lesson worth carrying beyond our shelter walls, so today we're asking our community to help save a life - a human life. Someone you've never even met.

Right now, the U.S. is experiencing a severe national blood shortage. Blood donations are urgently needed for accident victims, people undergoing surgery, cancer patients, and others facing life-threatening medical emergencies.

If you've ever thought about donating, now is the time. Today and tomorrow are the final two days to give blood and receive a $15 Fandango Movie Reward as a thank you.

You all know we love cats, and we love movies too - that's why we're so proud of our partnership with Hysteria Fest. So here's a chance to do two great things: help save a life, then go see a movie.

A big shoutout to Fandango for encouraging people to step up for one another. We could all use a little more of that right now.

Please consider donating blood if you're able. Someone you'll never meet may get another birthday, another family dinner, another chance because you took an hour out of your day.

Find a blood donation center or blood drive near you:

❤️ Give blood. Save a life. Enjoy a movie.

Please Help Us Feed Our Kittens!

We've got a whole group of growing kittens now—and, as kittens tend to do, they all have definite - and different - opinions about what belongs in their bowl!

Little Ube, our playful and loving gray kitten, is still an exceptionally picky eater. We have tried seven different kinds of dry kitten food, but she will only eat Royal Canin Mother & Babycat. Her furry little black-coated friend, Taro, prefers Sheba kitten food and Fancy Feast Gems.

Then there are Funyun, Ruffles, Miss Vickie and Red Hot Riplet—our “orange chips” litter. They were found on a farm outside of Hannibal and cared for by the people who found them until they could make their way to rescue. We will share more about these four soon, but right now our biggest concern is helping them gain some weight, as the scale has been going in the wrong direction! The foods they are willing to eat are Meow Mix kitten dry food and Fancy Feast kitten wet food.

With kittens, feeding them is rarely as simple as filling a bowl. Keeping up with each of their individual needs takes time, money, energy and plenty of trial and error—but finding the right food and getting it to them is so essential in this critical growth period.

We are asking for your help in providing the foods they like by:
1. Ordering through our Amazon wishlist at https://a.co/01jZqYpM
2. Ordering from Chewy or another online retailer
3. Purchasing it locally and bringing it (or having it delivered) to us at The Cat Shelter at 2151 59th Street in St. Louis.

URGENT NOTE: We are short-staffed today and we REALLY need Meow Mix dry kitten food and Fancy Feast Gems by tomorrow morning (7/11/2026). If there is any one reading this who could bring some over to us today, we would be so grateful. We will be here at the shelter until 6pm. Please let us know in the comments if you will be heading our way!

Because of your help, we can keep giving each kitten what they need to grow healthy and strong. Thank you so much! 😽

🚨 URGENT NEED: PURIFIED WATER 🚨

UPDATE: We have received enough water and donations to get us through tomorrow. If the advisory lasts longer, we may need more help, but 🤞. THANK YOU to everyone who has donated, shared and cared!

St. Louis City has issued a boil water advisory for our area. Contamination testing will not be completed for 24 hours so we are in need of water for at least today and tomorrow.

We currently have around 90 cats in the shelter who all need safe drinking water today. We are urgently requesting donations of purified water as quickly as possible.

Please drop off donations at:

St. Louis, MO 63110

Thank you for helping us keep our cats healthy, safe, and hydrated. Please share.
