One of my favorite parts of the day is overhearing conversations on our walkie-talkie system. Our caregivers are the sweetest, funniest people who love our dogs unconditionally. Today, I overheard one of our caregivers talking about Leander, a dog who was brought to us after being found in his home with his owner, who had sadly passed. Leander had been protecting his person for over a week. The caregiver was saying over the radio, “He is literally such a good dog. I can’t believe no one has picked him yet. He is so beautiful.” Moments like that bring a smile to my face, but also tears to my eyes, because we see these dogs every day and hope that someone will love them as much as we do and choose them. Hopefully, this will help Leander find the new forever home his caregiver buddy wishes for every day. ❤️‍🩹

Meet Ratatouille — A Loving, Friendly, and Athletic 45lb Pup Available for Adoption!

This sweet girl is 2 years old and has been through so much in her short life. Her previous owners kept her chained up outside in all kinds of weather despite multiple welfare calls before they abandoned her entirely. She would get stuck on her chain and cry for help. In the shelter, she found herself on the Lifesavers list due to shelter stress before her amazing foster picked her up shortly before her deadline 3 months ago.

With patience and decompression she has truly blossomed. She has learned to relax and finally able to able to be a dog and be shown the love she missed out on the first year of her life.

Some of her highlights:

⭐️ Crate trained, sleeps quietly through the night, and potty trained with a regular schedule

⭐️ Absolutely loves people

⭐️ Has had a few training lessons with Good Dog Enrichment and Training and knows several commands

⭐️ Enjoys car rides

⭐️ Loves life

⭐️ Comes with an extensive "starter pack" of supplies, toys, and treats

With slow, structured introductions, Ratty can live with another dog, but she would also be content as the only animal in the home soaking up all of the attention! Her dream yard would be one with a tall privacy fence and supervision.

She is the definition of resilience and overcoming trauma and how shelter dogs can shine, thrive, and show their true selves when given a chance.

Ratatouille is ready to start the next chapter in her adventure and would love a forever family of her own! She is currently in foster and not onsite at the shelter. Update: Foster secured 🎉 Please continue to donate so we can get him the help he needs asap

Yesterday, we introduced you to the little guy we found sitting outside our front door, unable to use his back legs. We told you we were working on getting answers and that we'd update you as soon as we knew more.

Well...we know more now. And unfortunately, French Onion Dip needs a lot of help. ❤️‍🩹

Our veterinary team has determined that he has complete paralysis of his hind legs with no motor function. He is unable to urinate or defecate on his own, and he is in significant pain. He needs to be seen by a veterinary neurologist as soon as possible. From there, he's likely looking at an MRI to determine exactly what is causing the paralysis and where the problem is located, and potentially spinal decompression surgery.

Our veterinarian estimates we're looking at $8,000 or more in specialty care, depending on exactly what he needs.

That's a lot for one little dog...but thankfully, we don't have to do this alone. ❤️‍🩹

Our amazing friends at Home 2 Home Canine Orphanage have agreed to tag French Onion Dip and take on the next part of his journey. By coming together and doing what each of us can, we're hoping to give this little guy the best possible chance.

But before that can happen, we really need your help.

Our most immediate need is a COMMITTED MEDICAL FOSTER ASAP. Home 2 Home cannot pull French Onion Dip without somewhere for him to go. His foster will need to be comfortable caring for a dog with significant medical needs, including helping him empty his bladder, managing his mobility and following the treatment plan provided by his veterinary team. Home 2 Home will be there to support his foster through the process.

And we should probably mention...French Onion Dip is so incredibly sweet. His medical needs may sound like a lot, but this little guy has so much love to give. Whoever opens their home to him will be giving him an incredible gift, but we have a feeling he'll return that kindness tenfold. ❤️‍🩹

And then there's our biggest need...funding the $8,000+ in medical care ahead of him.

We started his fundraising journey yesterday, and the funds raised for his care will go with him. From this point forward, we're asking anyone who wants to help French Onion Dip to donate directly to Home 2 Home Canine Orphanage so they have the resources they need to take on his medical care.

Yesterday, so many of you rallied around this little guy. You donated. You shared his story. You offered wheelchairs. You told us about your own dogs who have been through something similar. You asked us what you could do to help.

Remember Bossie? ❤️

We recently shared a video of this cutie hanging out in our lobby after his Doggy Day Out, where we talked a little about how he came to CARE and just how much the shelter environment affects him.

Bossie came to us after being left in a crate in a backyard, in direct sunlight, for more than five days.

Then he came to CARE, and shelter life has been really hard on him. The noise, activity and constant stimulation cause Bossie a tremendous amount of stress.

But recently, Bossie got an even bigger break from the shelter: a foster home.

And the difference has been incredible.

His foster says Bossie is SO GOOD in the house. In her words, “I can't ask for more for a housemate!”

And apparently we forgot one VERY important Bossie fact: he's a total cuddle bug. ❤️ He loves being close to his people, snuggling, hugs and kisses.

❤️ Housebroken
❤️ Sleeps through the night
❤️ Not destructive
❤️ Calm while his foster works
❤️ Does well in his kennel when left alone
❤️ Gentle taking treats and playing with toys
❤️ Playful and gentle with their 9-year-old
❤️ Comes when called
❤️ Has done great meeting new people
❤️ Has gone into stores and other homes
❤️ Even handled a small party at the house like a champ

His foster actually rated him a 1.5 on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the easiest kind of dog to care for.

A 1.5! 🥹

Bossie is still working on his confidence when the world gets busy. Walks can be overwhelming when there are lots of people, bikes or other dogs around, and he'll need someone willing to continue helping him work through that.

We also don't want that to give anyone the wrong idea about Bossie and other dogs! He's done well meeting dogs in passing at CARE, and we think he may even enjoy having a doggy friend in his new home. As always, we'd want to make sure it's a good match and take introductions slowly and properly.

The biggest thing we've learned?

Bossie isn't a dog who struggles in a home. He's a dog who struggles in the shelter.

And unfortunately, his current foster commitment ends this weekend.

His foster told us she would hate to see him regress because “he really is doing so well.”

We would hate to see that, too.

Bossie needs a foster takeover or forever family before he returns to the shelter on Saturday. He absolutely has a place here with us, but now that we've seen how well he's doing in a home, we would LOVE to keep him in one.

Maybe that's another foster home where he can keep decompressing and building his confidence.

Or maybe Boss-Boss has already done enough moving around, and Saturday could be the day he goes HOME for good. ❤️

Meet Toaster Strudel! 💙🐾— Kid, Cat & Dog Friendly Puppy Available for Adoption!

Toaster is an adorable 8-month-old, approximately 30-lb puppy who is starting to show us just how sweet and silly he is in foster care. He loves being around his people, lounging on his giant dog bed, and playing with his toys.

And this boy LOVES squeaky toys! Give him a good squeaker and he'll happily entertain himself while you hang out nearby.

Toaster has been wonderfully gentle with his fosters’ children, including their 7-month-old baby, whom he likes to give very polite kisses. He's also cat safe—in fact, he's much more likely to run away and hide from a cat than chase one! At the shelter, Toaster was incredibly dog friendly in playgroups, so much so that he was our tester dog to help more shy dogs show their playful side!

In the home, he’s crate trained, settles beautifully in his crate, rides well in the car, and has shown great house manners so far. He's food motivated and already seems to know "sit" and "drop it," so we're excited to see what else this smart little guy can learn.

Toaster is still figuring out that the big outside world isn't so scary, and his fosters are helping him build that confidence one step at a time. He's a sweet, playful puppy who just needs a little patience and consistency while he learns that he's safe. ❤️

Imagine our surprise when we looked out the front door and saw this little face staring back at us. ❤️‍🩹 He was just sitting there, waiting for someone to notice him.

We don't know much about his story yet. Someone knew he needed help and brought him to a place where they knew he could get it. While we wish they had stayed to give us any information they had about him, we're grateful he made his way to CARE.

Once we brought him inside, we quickly realized just how much help he needs. This little guy is unable to use his back legs, and our clinic team is working to figure out what's going on and what we can do to help him. We don't have those answers yet, but we're hoping to know more soon.

We could really use some help with the cost of his care. Exams, diagnostics and whatever comes next can add up quickly, and every donation will help us get the answers we need and figure out what comes next for this little guy.

For now, we're working on getting him some answers...and in the meantime, he's surrounded by people who already adore him.

🌈 We recently learned of the passing of CARE alum Queenie, and our hearts are with the family who loved her so deeply for the last six years. ❤️

Long before she was Queenie, we knew her as Red.

Before coming to CARE, Red had been used as a guard dog at two derelict properties and had lived in an abandoned house without heat in the winter or cooling in the summer. She had spent so much of her life learning to protect herself and her surroundings that arriving at the shelter didn’t suddenly make those instincts disappear.

In the beginning, Red struggled. Very few people could safely handle her, and trusting new people took time. But gradually, as she became more comfortable and began building relationships with staff and experienced volunteers, we started seeing more and more of the dog underneath all of that survival mode.

Eventually, she found the family who would change everything. ❤️

They renamed her Queenie, and for the next six years, they gave her a life full of love, safety and adventure.

Queenie hiked through the mountains of Colorado, visited beaches in Maine, Florida and Alabama, saw Niagara Falls, explored New Orleans twice, went on boat rides and camping trips, soaked up the sunshine and loved rolling down the hill in her yard on her back.

The dog who once knew such a small and difficult world ended up seeing so much of it.

Her family shared that Queenie brought a love into their home that can never be replaced, and we are so grateful to them for giving her the chance to become so much more than the circumstances she came from.

Six years wasn't nearly long enough, but they were six years filled with adventure, comfort, family and being completely, deeply loved.

Rest easy, Queenie. ❤️🐾

What a life you got to live.

We’ve already had six dogs come in so far today, including these three scared little puppies who are already starting to warm up. ❤️ They really need the chance to keep doing that in a home, not in a loud, busy shelter.

Add that to the 10 dogs we took in yesterday, and we desperately need people to open their homes to foster or adopt.

The heat index is already 106° today, it’s only getting hotter, and we know there are more dogs on the way. We need to make room for them, and we really need your help to do it.

If you’ve been thinking about fostering or adopting, please come see us this week. Every dog who goes into a home gives us space to help the next one who comes through our doors.

And a reminder...thanks to an incredibly generous donor, adoption fees are currently WAIVED! ❤️ Our goal is to get at least 40 dogs into homes this week, and we would love nothing more than to see every one of those 40 spots filled.
