Winston presented after swallowing a needle.

He was initially seen at an emergency clinic, where inducing vomiting was unsuccessful.
Over the following week, repeat X-rays were performed to try to track its location.

When he came to us, imaging suggested the needle might still be in the stomach, so we started with a minimally invasive endoscopy.
But when the scope didn’t reveal it, we made the decision to move forward with surgery, because sharp objects like this can migrate and cause serious damage.

We were able to locate and safely remove the needle with a quick procedure,
and Winston is now on the road to recovery.

This is a condition called urethral prolapse.

It occurs when the inner lining of the urethra protrudes through the tip of the p***s, appearing as a red, swollen mass. This tissue is very delicate and easily becomes irritated, ulcerated, or even necrotic.

Urethral prolapse is seen most commonly in young, intact male dogs, especially brachycephalic breeds. Increased abdominal pressure from excitement, straining, or even breathing effort can contribute to its development.

Clinically, it can cause pain, bleeding, excessive licking, and difficulty urinating, significantly affecting quality of life.

Treatment is surgical.
In this case, we removed the damaged tissue and performed a urethral resection with anastomosis, along with a urethropexy to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Because this condition is strongly associated with intact males, neutering is also recommended, and was performed in this patient.

The result?
A comfortable, relieved dog back to normal function and a much better quality of life.

Behind every advanced procedure is a team that never stops learning.

Today was dedicated to endoscopy training for our doctors and technicians, because staying current is not optional in modern veterinary medicine. We invest in regular, hands-on training across all areas so our entire team is confident, skilled, and ready to deliver the highest level of care.

From diagnostics to minimally invasive procedures, it takes continuous education to stay at the forefront and that is exactly what we are committed to.

A big thank you to Karl Storz for supporting today’s training and helping us elevate what we can offer to our patients every day.

No scalpel. No stitches. Just skill and technology.

This cat swallowed a red ribbon. In many cases, that would mean abdominal surgery.

Instead, we used our state of the art GI endoscopy system to enter the stomach with a tiny high definition camera and safely retrieve the ribbon without making a single incision.

That means:
Short anesthesia time
No surgical pain
Minimal recovery
Back to normal life faster

It may look like a video game while we navigate inside the stomach in real time, but what you are seeing is advanced minimally invasive medicine in action.

We invest in technology because your pets deserve the best options available.

Southwick Veterinary Hospital
Modern medicine. Minimally invasive. Maximum care.

Seeing more means doing better for your pet!

With advanced endoscopic technology, we can now examine the ears, nasal passages, and digestive tract with incredible detail, often without surgery. In many cases, we are able to remove foreign objects from the stomach or take biopsies without making an incision, which means less pain and faster recovery.

This video shows video otoscopy in action, allowing us to see deep into the ear canal and eardrum in real time and treat ear problems more accurately.

Modern tools. Gentler care. Better outcomes for our patients.
