In a lot of places around the USA, fireworks are already filling the sky, sparkling and hot and loud. And terrifying for some dogs.

Here are three tips we follow when dealing with dogs scared of fireworks:

(1) Give them a safe, calm space. If they’re crate trained, use their crate. If not, try an interior room with no windows, like a closet or a bathroom. Make sure they have something that smells like you and provide them with familiar toys and treats. Some dogs react well to things like anxiety vests (Thundershirt is a popular example). There are anti-anxiety treats that can help as well.

(2) Try to limit the noise of the fireworks. Turning on a fan or television near them can help mask the sound of the fireworks. Make sure you use soothing sounds and not loud action movies.

(3) Wear them out. Take them for a long walk before the fireworks start. Play with them. Run them through an obstacle course. Do whatever you can to get out their energy so they’ll be more relaxed and tired when the fireworks start.
