Every time you correct barking, the feeling underneath gets bigger.
Your dog is not safe AND something bad just happened.
So the brain dials up even more.
That is why the barking always comes back.
Here is what works instead:
Step 1: pick one word. Something calm like “nice.” Say it once, then give a treat. Do this 10 times in a quiet room.
Step 2: once your dog expects a treat when they hear “nice,” start using it when small things happen. A noise outside. A car door. Say “nice” and treat.
Step 3: work up to bigger triggers. The second the trigger appears, say “nice” and treat. Before any barking starts.
You are not stopping the bark.
You are changing what the trigger means to their brain.
