People often ask, “What’s Sky Soldier Dog Training?”

It’s more than just dog training.

On September 29, 2012, SFC Daniel T. Metcalfe was killed in Afghanistan.

I never had the privilege of knowing him personally. But I was fortunate to learn from men who knew him, were influenced by him, and were themselves shaped by the men who came before them.

That is part of what the name Sky Soldier Dog Training means to me.

It was the motto of the 173rd long before it became the name of a little dog training studio in St. Louis. And long before I ever put it on a business card, there were Sky Soldiers who gave their lives wearing that name.

SFC Metcalfe was one of them.

I have been fortunate to spend my life around men who taught me how to lead, take responsibility, and carry myself when things aren’t easy. Much of what I bring into my work today came from those men.

So yes, I train dogs.

But I also recognize how small and fortunate that responsibility really is.

We get to spend our days doing something as seemingly silly as teaching dogs to sit, heel, and behave because there were men before us who were willing to do things that were anything but silly.

Their sacrifice made the ordinary possible.

Remembering SFC Daniel T. Metcalfe

Your dog does not need to be friends with every dog it sees.

I know.

Absolutely devastating news.

Somewhere along the way, “socialization” became synonymous with throwing your puppy into a dog park and hoping they figure it out.

That isn’t socialization.

That’s a controlled experiment where you forgot to control anything.

If your goal is to have a dog that can calmly exist around other dogs, then teach that.

Find a stable, well-behaved dog.

Control the environment.

Control the interaction.

Teach your dog how to behave.

And accept the possibility that your dog may never be the social butterfly you dreamed about.

That’s okay.

You’re not friends with everyone either.

And somehow you’ve survived.

The dog park isn’t for socialization.

If you’ve wondered where the hell I’ve been…

I finally wrote it down.

Last September, I got bitten by a 110-pound German Shepherd that had already bitten three people.

That wasn’t actually the part that changed things for me.

What happened afterward was.

Six years.
2,800+ dogs.
Thousands of owners.
A lot of great experiences.

And a few that made me seriously question whether I wanted to keep doing this at all.

I’ve spent the last year thinking about what that incident changed in me, what I’ve learned about dog ownership, and why I’ve become increasingly unsure about how much longer I want to keep doing this.

This isn’t a “5 things I learned from a dog bite” post.

It’s much more personal than that.

I finally wrote the whole thing.

“Where Have I Been?”

Read it on Substack.

We have a tendency to turn training tools into moral positions.

Rewards are good.

Corrections are bad.

Or the opposite:

Corrections are everything.

Rewards are weakness.

Both are wrong.

Every dog deserves reward for doing something right.

Every dog needs to understand when something is wrong.

That’s not cruelty.

That’s communication.

The problem isn’t that we use rewards.

The problem isn’t that we use corrections.

The problem is when we build an entire training philosophy around refusing to use one of them.

The amount may change.

The timing may change.

The application may change.

But the fundamentals don’t.

Reward what you want.
Correct what you don’t.
Teach the dog what to do instead.

You don’t need to swing the pendulum back to the old extreme.

You need to stop swinging it.

Train with clarity.

Your dog isn’t going to wake up one morning and decide to be easier to live with.

If the behavior is becoming a problem, waiting for it to fix itself isn’t a training plan.

Training doesn’t have to be complicated. But it does have to happen.

Stop waiting. Start training.
