Raw pet foods are a popular choice for many health conscience pet owners. Unfortunately, there are risks to pets who eat raw food, just as there are to humans who consume undercooked meat and fish.
The FDA has released the following advisory for Raaw Energy diets. The diets were found to contain Listeria, E. coli and salmonella, all serious pathogens for dogs and people. Please throw away these diets if you have them at home and monitor your pets for GI illness.
Our doctors do not recommend raw food for pets because of the risk to pets. Owners can also become sickened while preparing the food.
Additionally, we do not recommend grain-free diets. Dogs are developing heart disease while on grain free diets. The cause is unclear, and not all dogs develop heart disease. Given we do not know why certain dogs develop heart disease on these diets, we currently recommend that our clients avoid grain free diets.
