Sigh.

It's happened again.

Back in January, we offered to bunnysit a rabbit for a local family after they experienced a house fire.

This family had originally rescued a dumped rabbit from outdoors. We helped them get set up with supplies, education, and support, and everything was going wonderfully.

When the fire happened, we were happy to help. The plan was simple: we'd watch Crockett until they got back on their feet.

For months, they stayed in touch. They responded to updates. They checked in on him. Everything seemed normal.

Then the communication stopped.

We've called. Texted. Emailed. Sent Facebook messages. Asked around through mutual contacts in the community. We've tried every avenue we can think of.

Nothing.

We've held onto Crockett for far longer than we normally would because we genuinely hoped his family would reach back out. We wanted to give them every opportunity to come get him or even just let us know what was going on.

But at some point, we have to accept reality. They no longer want the little guy. We’ve watched him for over half his life now.

So, everyone, meet Crockett.

He's about a year old and has somehow convinced everyone he is actually a small dog in a rabbit costume. He's friendly and always wants to know what you're doing. If there's attention available, Crockett would like some.

Because he's settled in so well, he'll remain in his current bunnysitting home as a foster while we get him neutered, vetted, and ready for adoption.

This isn't the ending we hoped for when we agreed to watch him.

But we're going to make sure it's the beginning of something wonderful.

No matter how you look at it, everything is getting more expensive.

Over the past year, we've seen a major shift in the reasons rabbits are surrendered. For the first time since opening Dolly’s, financial hardship has become one of the most common reasons why families give up their bunnies.

Most people don't get a rabbit expecting to fall on hard times. They love their pets and want to keep them. So we've been brainstorming ways rabbit owners can save money without sacrificing care.

Here are our 10 best ideas:

1. Ask local produce stores if they'll donate expired rabbit safe produce that would otherwise be thrown away. Many stores, especially local businesses, are surprisingly willing to help.

2. Use cash-back apps like Upside for gas and groceries. I use the money I’ve earned back to buy more greens for the rabbits. Click here to get started: https://upside.app.link/RHUFXP. 3. Buy in bulk whenever possible. Larger bags of pellets, hay, litter, and treats often have a much lower cost per pound than smaller packages. Team up with another rabbit owner if you don't have storage space.

4. Grow some of your own rabbit food. Herbs like basil, cilantro, parsley, dill, and mint are easy to grow in pots and can save money while providing fresh treats for your rabbit.

5. Adopt from rescues instead of buying from breeders or pet stores. Rescue rabbits are already spayed or neutered, which saves hundreds of dollars.

6. Rotate toys instead of constantly buying new ones. Most rabbits are thrilled when an old toy "magically" reappears a few weeks later.

7. Save cardboard boxes, paper towel rolls, and brown packing paper. Rabbits often enjoy free enrichment just as much as store-bought toys.

8. Join local rabbit groups. People frequently give away unopened food, supplies, pens, carriers, and other items when their rabbits pass away.

9. Turn bunny birthdays and holidays into supply drives. If friends and family ask what your rabbit wants for Christmas, ask for hay, pellets, litter, or gift cards instead of toys you'll forget about in a week.

10. Ask for help before you're overwhelmed. Many rescues, including ours, have food assistance programs, low-cost resources, educational support, and other options that can help keep rabbits in their homes.

Every girl needs a chill partner.

Someone who talks her down when she's being dramatic.

Someone who keeps the peace.

Someone who looks at her latest questionable decision and says, "Let's maybe not."

Meet Mrs. Hollywood and Mr. Hollywood.

These 2 came to us from a rescue that was shutting down in Mississippi and they couldn't be more different.

Mrs. Hollywood, the darker bunny, is full of opinions. Full of spice. Full of energy. If there's a way to turn a situation into a bigger situation, she'll find it.

Mr. Hollywood, meanwhile, is perhaps the nicest rabbit we've ever met.

When Mrs. Hollywood starts getting worked up, he's often right there, helping keep her calm.

Every spicy girl deserves a laidback partner, and Mr. Hollywood has mastered the art. In fact, he's so friendly that he used to attend nursing home events, where he charmed everyone he met.

Together, they're the perfect balance.

One brings the excitement.
One brings the emotional support.
And somehow, it works.

They're looking for a home together, preferably one that appreciates a little drama, a lot of love, and a husbun whose full-time job appears to be gently managing the drama.

For the past several months, one of our adopters, Gabe, has been working on a very special project.

He's been writing a children's chapter book about DDH alums Lillian and her husbun, Spicy (now Lambert).

And you guys...it’s adorable.

The story is written from Lillian's point of view and just might be one of the sweetest things we've ever read.

The books are currently being printed, so once they arrive, we'll be hosting a book signing at Dolly’s Dream Store where everyone can meet the author and celebrate this incredible project.

Talk about a full circle moment.

Lillian and Lambert were once discarded, before they were rabbits in our rescue. Here, they were loved by volunteers, cared for by fosters, and supported by all of you. Now, years later, they've inspired their dad enough to write an entire book.

That's the kind of impact animals can have on our lives.

You never know when a rabbit you're helping today is going to become a beloved family member, or the inspiration behind a story that will be shared with children for years to come.

We're so honored that Lillian and Lambert mean this much to Gabe and we can't wait to share the finished book with all of you.

Just look at this little guy.

A short time ago, Thomas and Also Thomas were fighting for their lives.

Both arrived with severe wounds and abscesses that needed immediate medical attention. They’d been dumped, then “rescued,” and placed in the hot summer sun for 3 days. Their time was almost up.

Thanks to quick intervention, dedicated foster care, and a lot of veterinary support, they're now healing beautifully.

Their wounds have been cleaned, they're receiving antibiotics, and they're getting something every rabbit deserves: the chance to be a menace.

One of our favorite updates? Also Thomas's fur is starting to grow back.

And judging by these photo, he knows exactly how lucky he is.

Look at that face. That's the face of a rabbit who has discovered the joy of not being in a medical crisis.

Rescue is often exhausting, but moments like this remind us why we do it.

Thank you for making stories like Thomas and Also Thomas possible. Their second chances exist because of your support.

One of our core beliefs is that whenever possible, rabbits should stay with the families who love them.

Recently, one of our adopters reached out about potentially surrendering her rabbit.

Life had hit all at once.

She recently welcomed a new baby, her husband is away for work, her senior dog has developed health issues, and she's trying to juggle it all. Sometimes even the most wonderful pet owners find themselves overwhelmed when everything happens at once.

Instead of taking her rabbit back into the rescue, we offered another option.

We're going to be bunnysitting him for a month, completely free of charge, while she catches her breath and gets back on her feet.

Because sometimes people don't need to surrender their pets.

Sometimes they just need a little help.

We're hopeful that in a few weeks, this bunny will head right back home to the family that loves him, and that's one of our favorite kinds of rescue stories.

One of the biggest rabbit myths out there is that rabbits should be fasted before surgery.

Please don't do that.

Unlike dogs and cats, rabbits can't vomit. That means the usual "no food before surgery" rule that many people are familiar with doesn't apply the same way to rabbits.

In fact, rabbits should generally keep eating right up until it's time to head to the vet.

A rabbit's digestive system is designed to stay moving constantly. Hay goes in, hay gets digested, and the whole system keeps chugging along. When rabbits stop eating, that system can start slowing down, putting them at risk for GI stasis - a life threatening condition.

So if your rabbit has a spay, neuter, or other procedure scheduled, don't be surprised if your rabbit-savvy veterinarian tells you to keep the hay flowing.

As far as rabbits are concerned, being told they can continue eating before surgery is the only reasonable medical policy.

Imagine trying to explain fasting to an animal whose entire personality is based around constantly munching and making 200-300 poops a day.

It would never work anyway.

Recently, someone submitted an adoption application and then asked us to convince them why they should adopt from us.

We’re not here to beg or convince anyone to adopt from us. We don’t have time for it and our work speaks for itself.

Every single day, we put in the time, the care, and the effort to rescue bunnies in need. We ensure they’re healthy, socialized, and ready for their forever homes. We provide support to adopters long after they take their new family member home. And we do it all because we believe every rabbit deserves a chance at a safe, loving life.

If you want to adopt from a rescue that puts the animals first, we’re here.

3 days ago, late at night, Nacho Mama was caught outside.

2 days ago, she was rushed to the vet for what appeared to be an open wound on her abdomen.

Yesterday, she underwent emergency surgery.

What we thought was a wound turned out to be far more serious. Nacho Mama had a massively enlarged uterus filled with pus and fluid, along with multiple internal masses. Several had already ruptured.

There is no question she would have died without immediate medical care.

The surgery was long, complicated, and intensive.

But today, Nacho Mama is home.

And she's doing wonderfully.

Her uterus has been sent to the lab so we can get a definitive diagnosis, but for now we're focused on helping her rest and recover.

One thing we've noticed already is how much she appreciates the little things. Fresh lettuce. Soft blankets. A quiet place to sleep.

We're keeping her environment calm and stress-free, so we'll be limiting photos while she heals.
